This is entirely your decision but if that is your only concern and you want my opinion I personally wouldn’t consider dropping out of the job. Presuming you’ll be on a 12 hour roster you will have plenty of time and opportunities to squeeze in travel. It’s a golden opportunity at (I’m going to...

A general tip for anyone… whilst 6 months full/ 6 months half has been considered as both generous and not generous, it might always be worth considering life insurance/ critical illness/ income protection. A very individual choice but an important one to consider, bearing in mind the earlier...

Congratulations on getting this far… Gents sorry to be this guy… Someone else might give you the answer but it’s it’s fairly important that you have a good read through this thread as it will broaden your knowledge for the interview. You will find the answers to your questions, particularly in...

Ah yes that’s a good point! Wasn’t there also a mention of a promise to try to extend the options for leisure to include Eurostar etc! Yes no pay rise as yet, no change since 2020. There’s also proposals to bring in new starters at lower grades, Grade 2 for training school, Grade 4 for learning...

Signallers (Ops) and Maintenance are tied in together and the offer hasn’t been accepted. Management grades have accepted their deal so perhaps syngas what you’re thinking of! Regarding the discounted travel that’s up for negotiation it is only for leisure travel. For commuting to work there is...

I don’t know about that being uniform across the board. Your roster might have been set up with shorter blocks of shifts and a more regular on/ off pattern so you can still do more overtime if you want to without going over the hours for example. At BROC you’re never rostered more than 48...

I see, Sunday’s are outside the working week but you’re committed to 2 in 5 currently. It’s a 35 hour working week. 07:00-19:00 changeover times but mutual handovers 30 mins earlier. Roster due to change in August but a maximum of 4 shifts in a row. Average would be 3 on/ 3 off with some...

YMMV as it depends on your circumstances but there is a Career Average (CARE) or a Defined Contribution (NRDC) scheme. The general consensus seems to be the CARE and then as Seej says across to RPS (if it still exists/ is open to new members in five years).

It sounds like you’ve prepared well. I’m not suggesting that you should go into too much depth or that the questions and answers should be too technical however it’s undeniable that if you can answer “What do you know about Network Rail/ the role etc” and you can add in a few specifics about...

Research the key geographical areas for your signal box. Areas of control, main stations, TOCs and FOCs that operate, method of signalling. Good luck with the interview.

It’s lovely to have a wide range of opinions from staff which reflects the diverse spectrum of staff we have. At times you are straying towards the more difficult end which is sad to see. Is there anything anyone can do to help? It’s upsetting to hear that the office politics at your box are a...
