DFT consultation on scrapping under-21 50km limit

There was a piece on this last night on BBC look north for North East and Cumbria from Carlisle. The idea this will make any significant difference to their ability to recruit and retain drivers is laughable.

    Manual Transmission on buses

Indeed, ok for a ride out to Ashington, awful on Tyneside circular,I blame the Stotty Box ( Bristol LH) for my left knee being weak. You had to open the cab door to find reverse. First and second gear were more or less the same, as were third and fourth. I assumed this was due to the gearbox...

    Manual Transmission on buses

Have you ever driven a manual bus in service? There is nothing wrong with a decent automatic gear box, or even better in my opinion, a semi auto.

Arriva North East staff strike ballot

I will be directly affected by this, they are the only buses that serve me. The drivers have 100% support from me, awful company to work for. I know this because I used to drive for them. Never again. Their Facebook pages mention the strike but discussion is verboten. So people discuss it in...

    Night buses outside of London

Not sure if it counts as a night bus or a very early bus, 787 Newcastle City centre to Newcastle Airport starting soon, first bus leaves 02 50.

    Ticket Inspectors onboard buses.

Aye, you are right, jobs ruined. Seriously, they must be losing a heck of a lot of revenue to fare evasion to make it worth their while sending a team out. And it will be a team, even then they will not be permitted to confront anyone. In 20 years service bus I never saw a penalty fare...

    Ticket Inspectors onboard buses.

Inspectors or revenue protection are mainly there to catch drivers fiddling. One driver fiddling takes much more money than the odd fare avoiding passenger.

Ferrying vehicles between depots and operators - who drives em ?

Thing is, they were still better than the ex Greater Manchester Fleetlines they replaced.

Ferrying vehicles between depots and operators - who drives em ?

In my experience, drivers and fitters on rest days for overtime. Once did Newcastle to Toddington services, 2 fitters and ten drivers down in a mini bus to pick up 10 ex London MCWs. Left Newcastle at 6 am, picked up buses at Toddington at midday ( minibus would do 60 mph) then best part of...

Northumberland Line to be re-opened to passengers

Indeed, it's mainly a haunt for ne'er do wells who want to avoid the inspectors in town. I used it now and then to visit a mate on the coast, but it was horrendous in the evening, in the end I used to get the bus.

Northumberland Line to be re-opened to passengers

Regarding Manors, I used to live in the area and had no idea the old station was still there, one morning I was out for a walk and stumbled across it, I honestly thought it was abandoned, very run down, it still had working pay phone on the wall. It's one of those central yet oddly remote...

    Assault screens on buses

Hello and welcome to the forum. I always thought this was the way to greet new posters, silly me. No where in your post do I detect any snobbery nor will I attempt to score points with straw man arguements an ad hominem attacks. You are right about some services needing screens more than...

    Assault screens on buses

I was unaware that buses still operate without permanent assault screens. I am old enough to remember when we had none, anyone threatened me or was abusive, I was out of the cab and they were walking home. Threats and abuse were rare. Now you are just expected to take it, with zero support...

Refusal to give up space for wheelchair

That's fab and how it should be. One thing of note, not all pushchairs are equal, some are for a disability and it might not be obvious to the driver and passengers shouldn't be asked about their disability status. I have known passengers say the buggy is broken and can't be folded. Minefield.

    Heating in electric buses

Because a bus is fitted with heaters when new, it does not follow that they will still have working heaters in use.

    Heating in electric buses

I think it's very unlikely a bus would be ordered with no heating for the driver or heating for the windscreen. I would refuse to drive a bus with no cab heating in the winter, indeed I have done so. I would not put it past the UK cut every corner bus industry to order a bus with no saloon...

    School Bus Drivers

I think that depends on the school. We had one faith based school where the kids were very well behaved, any bother and the teachers came down on them like a ton of bricks. We had another where 2 failing schools had been merged into one, much bigger, failing school, 4 teachers on board every...

    School Bus Drivers

I did 15 years on a rota that did schools at least twice a day, some times 4. Your employer will, or at least should tell you what you are and aren't permitted to do. In reality, or at least my 15 years experience of reality, neither the company, the school or the local authority care, as...

Over 66 pass applied for - query about validity

If I recall correctly, Nexus permits the use of these passes out of the time restrictions if it's for a doctor's or hospital appointment.

    No bus or no driver.
