Should lines electrified with 3rd rail convert to 25Kv ac

Does the increased battery potential/usage on new trains make AC/DC changeover easier by allowing a "gap" between, rather than having to have a problematic/expensive dual voltage section like Thameslink? This might make "piecemeal" conversion more viable.

Table vs. Facing vs. Airline + other proposals: what is the correct balance?

Yes, exactly this. I was amazed when a colleague told me I didnt need to bother getting a table on a German ICE (standard class) as you could use your laptop fine in airline. I thought he must have one of those tiny laptops, but he was right. I can see pros and cons of table and airline but...

Southampton Airport Parkway - why the brackets ?

How does that compare to London City (DLR not NR) which is the shortest I have done. Wheels down to train moving in under 15 mins...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

We are getting well off topic here (sorry) but I thought this was the point of ROSCOs - the trains are there independent of the franchise?

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

And this is the systemic issue: compensation (e.g. delay/repay or to government as franchisor) needs to be much higher to make it suicidal to even risk what has happened. These trains should have been introduced more slowly. I'm sure everyone can see this with 20/20 hindsight and I'm sure GA...

Through ticketing for journeys involving transfer between stations on foot

I think the issue with these transfer times is that they are used for two purposes:- Giving a default itinerary that shouldn't cause issues to nearly all passengers Being used for delay compensation purposes etc. For example, if I am doing the KGX-STP transfer up-thread and decide to allow 15...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Oh, and I know many routes are well short of 4tph, but none of the ones I personally know couldn't absorb that capacity if it could be provided economically enough via reducing overcrowding, modal shift and generated traffic. How many genuinely empty/quiet trains are there these days except...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Just playing devil's advocate for a minute, once you get over, say, 4toh, is it worth bothering too much about punctuality, per se, as opposed to just getting service to recover? To take the extreme example, I know the underground has a timetable, but do any passengers care, or even know? They...

Azuma train doors: Closed two minutes before departure, why?

I'm not sure what this actually gains either, although I'm not against it (my earlier remarks about which time should be published notwithstanding) - either the runner gets on the train before the doors are locked and no-one is delayed, or they don't and they look an idiot waving at the train as...

Azuma train doors: Closed two minutes before departure, why?

But why is the departure time of any interest at all to the passenger? Surely what you want to know is When do I have to leave the place I was (i.e the boarding time) When will I be at the place I want to be Whether that 2 minutes is sat at the platform waiting to depart or half a mile up the...

Azuma train doors: Closed two minutes before departure, why?

A very minor complaint, but I don't really agree with this practice. Surely the time published to the public should be the latest time that you can board the train? The rail industry internal timetable may, of course, have other information (e.g. fractional minutes now).
