Trivia: Stations that don't sound like they're Spelt

Maybe he was out of breath?

Trivia: Stations that don't sound like they're Spelt

Since we're including closed stations here, "Masham" station in North Yorkshire was pronounced "Massam".

Trivia: Stations that don't sound like they're Spelt

I think I have a steam era DVD somewhere where the BBC type narrator says "Sea-ham" and later on "Prud-hoe" instead of "Prudder".

Trivia: Stations that don't sound like they're Spelt

I remember the first time I went to Grosmont - for the NYMR - asking the Guard for a ticket to "Groz-mont" and him sneering "You mean Grow-mont?". And then there is Seaham, pronounced "See-um".

Darlington group to develop railway tourism

Maybe they could restore the former Great North Of England Railway engine shed at Parkgate Junction? I went past it the other day and it is derelict with trees growing round it.

    Olympics eyesore

As a matter of interest some of my 3,500 photo's on flickr happen to include derelict railway buildings with graffiti. For this reason I sometimes have grsffiti louts favourite them or add me as a contact. Invariably I respond by blocking them.

    Olympics eyesore

You guess wrong. I've travelled Europe extensively and been to the States twice. Next guess?

    Olympics eyesore

I think the graffiti will neatly sum up this country for tourists.

    Unpopular Classes of Heritage Diesels

Would THIS have floated your boat in March 1981? http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/3903908691/sizes/o/in/photostream/

    Unpopular Classes of Heritage Diesels

If we include "future preserved diesels" don't forget this megabeast, seen by me at Stratford in January 1981 http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinzac55/2658436359/sizes/l/in/photostream/

Compareing Hatfield to the Japanese Tsunami

The main difference is that Japan has a history of earthquakes and earthquakes can, to a limited extent, be predicted.

When was the last BR oil tail lamp used?

Just curious if anyone knows when the last oil tail lamp was used on British Rail? I think we stopped using them at Kings Cross in about 1986 but it must have been in the railway press when the last one went?

    The 'N' word - Nationalise

That would be great but I don't think RM should be privatised and if the EU don't agree, stuff them. I would be happier if successive government weren't forcing RM to stop offering services in an attempt to weaken it so that it can be sold off cheaply. One of the Post Offices the last (Labour)...

Anglesey railway track clear-up brings Gaerwen-Amlwch reopening closer

If the line hasn't been used for nearly 20 years I would think clearing leaves off the track is more of a publicity stunt than anything else. Tampers, Ballast Cleaners, new sleepers and S&T personnel would be more impressive.

    The 'N' word - Nationalise

I agree. I couldn't care less what the Royal Mail is doing in other countries. It is what is here that concerns me.

    The 'N' word - Nationalise

What remit does the EU have to decide that the postal sector should be opened up to competition?

    The 'N' word - Nationalise

"The politicians must at least think it works or they would be wanting to change it. " They don't care whether it works or what the public thinks of it. Tony Benn once said "All this government (Tory at the time) or ANY government wants is that you toddle along to the polling booth every 5...

    Scooters again

There's an additional point that if you were to accept the "principle" that trains should carry "scooters" (or mini 4 X 4's as I think of them) how many would you carry? And if it was , say, a crammed 2 car car unit Leeds to Harrogate in the rush hour and the person with the "scooter" got there...

    The 'N' word - Nationalise

It can of course say exactly that. Prior to the 1997 election Bliar said he would renationalise the railways and promptly reneged on that promise. It has been many years since the Tories, Labour and the LibDems merged into a pasitiche of each other. I still feel ashamed that I voted for Bliar...

    Nymr

This is true, but in a situation where a Pickering - Rillington link was ENTIRELY funded by national or local government, including costs devolving onto the NYMR such as track and signalling alterations at Pickering, what logical argument could they make against it? Imagine a Kings Cross -...
