    Broken Level Crossings

It does sometimes happen. The way it pans out is: 1) emergency vehicle contacts its control room 2) emergency services control room contacts Network Rail control on the private emergency phone number 3) Network Rail incident controller contacts the signaller and arranges to lift the barriers...

    MOM school

AOD = Auxilliary Operating Duties (i.e. Handsignaller, Pilotman 1 & 2, Level Crossing Attendant, Temporary Block Working etc.. ) The courses you do at York give you the Sentinel competencies but the real training for how you actually do a MOM job takes place when you are back at the depot on...

    MOM school

It is held in York as there are only 2 trainers. the whole thing lasts 28 days in total but that can either be continuous or broken up into weeks and days with gaps in between. It starts with PTS for those who do not already have it. Once you have passed PTS you go straight onto COSS (which you...

    Uniforms, the smartest and scruffiest?

RIO SIO and TOLO are competencies which only a relative few incident response staff hold, they are issued with the vests and carry them with them whenever they are on shift or on call so it is immediately available. My RIO vest is in my work vehicle and it gets put on immediately as soon as I...

    Uniforms, the smartest and scruffiest?

The rail industry already does this with the distinctive RIO (Rail Incident Officer), SIO (Station Incident Officer) and TOLO (Train Operator Liason Officer) hi vis vests worn at incidents. They have been about since the early 90s.

    Royal Train movements

DB Cargo provides drivers, Traction Inspector and travelling fitter Alstom also provides a travelling fitter Network Rail provides a Signalling Inspector (or equivalent Ops management) to travel on the train and they change over at Route boundaries. Bowler hats are no longer issued. Network Rail...

    A career as a signaller

It is not really worth its weight in gold if the LOM then rejects the candidate because they apparently cannot read and comprehend the meaning of a simple question. If the question is ‘do you have experience of taking an isolation’ you still automatically get a point if you answer yes and ‘my...

    A career as a signaller

I am making a 1 off return to this thread to point out that this is poor advice. Whether you are an internal or external applicant the 70 questions are the same for everyone, this is to give a fair way of scoring external applications against internal ones. The questions towards the end are...

    Career change into railway/underground

Anything over a NR grade 3 or 4 signaller role (depending on tax code) and he will be taking home more after tax than now. By the time you are up at grades 7/8/9 it will be a large uplift.

    Employee Privileges

A few years ago 1 of my employees was arrested for a serious offence and remanded. We found out because it was in the newspaper. He was shown as AWOL on the roster and after a couple of weeks of that HR sent him a letter to his home address saying if he did not show up for a meeting on such and...

    A career as a signaller

It means you are under consideration for the interview shortlist. It does not mean you are definitely going to be getting an interview.

    Signaller jobs

As a starter for 10, the company you have applied for is called Network Rail not National Rail. If you have not already done so have a look at this page on their website - https://www.networkrail.co.uk/campaigns/signalling-opportunities/ As per the post above mine, have a look at the A Career...

    East Kilbride/Barrhead electrification updates

It is a welfare pod, i.e. toilet and washing facilities. They are being rolled out nationally with the idea that track workers should never be more than 10 miles from one. It is a national program to improve welfare provision for track workers which was basically nonexistent before. There is a...

    A career as a signaller

Exactly the same a signallers! What I would suggest for any signaller is to use a spare or LOM day to visit to control if you possibly can. Perhaps easier said than done in these Corona times but worth it. You will learn from them and they will learn from you. Putting a name and face to a voice...

    A career as a signaller

With your experience as a pilot you will ace the interview and probably make an excellent signaller. Your skills are very transferrable and aiming for a higher grade position is exactly what I would expect. The only slight concern I would have as a hiring manager would be that if the aviation...

    A career as a signaller

This is exactly right. Once you are installed in a ROC grade 8 or 9 *any* move to another job apart from to SSM or control is a significant pay cut. Great if you fancy working in one location and role for the rest of your career, less good if you get itchy feet after a few years.

    A career as a signaller

I actually have no idea.. contracts are dealt with by the Onboarding team. Everyone is allocated to a unique position number on OrgPlus though which defines your role, location and grade.

    A career as a signaller

Also I do not mean to discourage anyone from applying for whatever job(s) they fancy. Once you have your sky blue polo shirt the world is your oyster and you can move anywhere you like. Just consider taking your time to get your feet under the desk first!

    A career as a signaller

Without getting too specific most trainers come from a signaller, MOM or LOM background and many still have connections, friendships and loyalties to their old role or area. They might be asked by their friends in their old area to look out for bright and talented new recruits with potential and...

Yes well if that is the case then it is entirely different! Sorry if I picked it up wrong.
