Do I have to use the most direct route?

I was think of an interesting day out and looked at Northern Rail tickets from Preston to Carlisle. However, I was wondering if I have to use the most direct route in either direction? I was thinking Preston - Blackburn - Clitheroe - Settle - Carlisle and for the return: Carlisle - Maryport -...

    High fare prices?

Hi I am looking for some advice if possible. Every year my parents and I travel from the Midlands (Birmingham / Cannock / Lichfield / Stafford) area to Falmouth. This year, they want to also take along my niece (who is under 15) and we won't all fit in the car. I have suggested that going on...

Can I take a motorcycle on a train?

Hi. Possibly an obscure question (and I didn't really know which forum to post in) but can I take my motorcycle on a train journey? I have an electric motorcycle (Super Soco TC1500) with a limited range of about 50 miles. My parents live 100 miles away and obviously I can't get to their house...

    Leniency on Rail card use?

My partner uses a mature student railcard to travel to college. This entitles discounted travel on trains after 9:59am. In order to ensure arrival on time, the only available train leaves at 9:57. Given that 99.9% of the journey (time and distance) will be undertaken after the 9:59am time limit...

    Overloaded train!

Well, at the weekend I found out that even in Train Sim World 2020, you can join 3 trains together and drive it. Sadly, I couldn't get it to go up the slight gradient out of the yard and it eventually slowed down to a halt. It then started sliding back down the gradient and derailed! I had a...

    Train Sim World 2 - Class 31 + 101

Hi - I have just run a couple of delightful services on the Tees Valley Line where I drive a class 31 coupled to a 2 car 101 DMU. Was this an actual practice in real life? It seems an odd and inefficient way to run a passenger service, but was quite enjoyable. The 31 isn't so sluggish in either...

    Bourdon group dot tests

I am just practicing my bourdon group dot tests and I'm not doing very well. I did 5 pages of 15 lines each spending 2 minutes per page. For my first attempt I got 5 lines of the 45 correct. Just how critical are these...?:(

    Northern Rail hiring

https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/traffic-and-travel/northern-hiring-train-drivers-cool-ps53000-year-salary-1369416 This isn't really news. Northern seems to have been hiring for months. I have one application outstanding (and still under assessment) since October. How long does the...

    Train Sim World 2020

Does anyone else here play Train Sim World 2020? I am finding that every signal that I come across seems to be green and even with the AWS enabled, I rarely get an alarm. Is there any way to increase the difficulty level?

How do drivers take toilet breaks?

Apologies if this is distasteful or covered elsewhere, but it is a genuine question that I just don't know the answer to. How do train drivers take toilet breaks? I was particularly considering drivers of long distance routes or freight trains where access to the train lavatories or station...

    Northern recruitment open days

Does anyone intend to go to Leeds event? (See picture attached, sorry I couldn't find a link nor get the Northern site to show me this). If you have been, did you find it useful? I am intending to go to the Anfield one on Wednesday, so having to take the day off work to do so. I already have...

Preston - Damage to overhead wires

Over the last couple of months, I have noticed a large number of cancellations and delays due to 'damage to over head wires' while running north of Preston. I thought that overhead wiring equipment was a fairly established technology and reasonably reliable. Is there a new factor or cause for this?
