I think this means they are going to paint over the rust rather than replace anything.

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

I know one of the authors of the technical paper, from a time when he was working in this area, but for another company....and it was a long, long time ago! As the paper says: 'it is clear that the most important issue is the natural process of sediment movement in the estuary blocking the...

Just swapped the HEPA filter in our Skoda. There are less effective aftermarket cabin/pollen filters available.

    Former British car marque revivals.

It's already happened in the motorcycle world. There is a new Triumph motorcycle company, which apart from the name, has nothing to do with the old company, however the brand has been in continuous production (sometimes with two or more companies making 'Triumphs' simultaneously) since 1902. As...

PM2.5 is lower than outside air in newer trains

Not an expert on A/C but I can make some generalisations. Yes, some car manufacturers have boasted that their exhaust emissions of particulates are cleaner than the air drawn into the engine. The same will be true for train engines. Older trains (and buildings) often had badly sited A/C...

Trivia: More than one operator on town services

the 53 service in Liverpool is run by Arriva and Stagecoach, they used to alternate every 5-6 minutes, but now they run together in pairs, and despite the timetable saying every 10 minutes (sometimes less), I seem to be waiting 20 minutes for them these days.

    Merseyrail Expansion

Like daodao I don't know what this comment about Ringway is about, other than to imply that senior people like me who still sometimes refer to Manchester Airport as Ringway are deluded. I sometimes refer to Liverpool John Lennon Airport as Speke too, and Aintree University Hospital is Fazakerley...

Merseyside Transport 1970s Liverpool Loop and After Plans

Well, talking of 'ownership'. the land on which the National Girobank headquarters were built was the 'King George V memorial playing fields and allotments', payed for by public subscription (including my dad's pocket money). The land was flogged off to the Post Office, presumably by Bootle...

Perhaps railway companies should be stripped of the right to issue private prosecutions

A Government committee has already looked into this issue; the House of Commons Justice Committee published a report in 2020 titled 'Private Prosecutions: Safeguards' The committee had started their investigations as a result of the Post Office private prosecutions. Their conclusions include...

Trivia: Quay side/ Harbour stations/ terminuses

There are trips from Southend Pier, getting along there on the Pier railway. Southport pier has had a railway along it for many years, and, a long time ago, had steamers sailing from the end. However the railway has been closed for a while, and the latest news is that the rail track is to be...

Trivia: Quay side/ Harbour stations/ terminuses

Holyhead. It's only a few years since I made a trip on MV Balmoral from Liverpool to Caernarfon. We tied up at a quay close to the site of the former railway station. Mostyn had a ferry service to Dublin between 2001 and 2004 and briefly in 2020, but the station is long closed.

    Milk churns

I remember seeing churns out by local roads in the early 1970s, and railway collection had died out some time before that round our way ( though newspapers, mushrooms and asparagus frequently filled the guard's compartment). It seems the Milk Marketing Board ceased all churn collections in 1979.

Warning Ducks, and other strange roadsign?

Yes, Town Police Clauses Act 1847, s28 Every person who rides or drives furiously any horse or carriage, or drives furiously any cattle: about the only bit of the section left. It might be an old act, but it's the one that allows closure of roads for street parties, the closure of the Melling...
