According to Longworth, the only non-corridor Mark 1s delivered new to the Southern were 29 seconds, 5 comps and 10 brake seconds, which were all built between 1955/56. Most of them were reallocated to the Western in 1964, which is I think when West-of-Salisbury became Western Region territory...

Why do some tramways use kmph rather than mph?

or 2.23 to convert m/s to mph. Using metres/second actually makes some kind of sense from a road safety point of view - if people realised that if you look away for 2 seconds at the legal speed limit you will have travelled the length of five buses, they might be a bit more attentive.

Why do some tramways use kmph rather than mph?

Rubber tyres on tarmac can stop faster than steel wheel on steel raikl, and buses can take avoiding actions that trams can't, so maybe a lower speed limit for trams is no bad thing. (Although an important issue for both is the safety of standing passengers in an emergency stop)

That's the first photographic evidence we've had of a 60+. I've been scouring the terrier and well tank photos on the web to see if they ever hauled Mk 1 stock. Biggest age gap on the same train? I did find this - that looks like Mark 1 stock on the right. (Could even be a DEMU?)...

That's more than four months before the last two well tanks were withdrawn. They must, surely, have met!

No, it isn't at all like that. That was my guess as to how a Feltham-based diagram would work. But, as expected, the one being worked is from Wimbledon, as per post 8764

Potential up to 2,000 job losses at Alstom Derby

Indeed - but now that Euston has been canned, even more trains will be needed at OOC than was envisaged when the order was made. Where to fit them in might be the issue. The core stations will take 11 cars, so an alternative might have been to extend 45 units from 9 to 11 cars. (SDO needed...

It was "only" 60 years old when moved to the island. I don't think they ever ran on the mainland again, and certainly not after withdrawal. The Hayling Island service ran from a bay at Havant, so the Terriers would not have been regular visitors at Fratton in service. Where were they shedded...

That's a 72 year gap. The first class 08s were introduced in 1953, 71 years ago, but what is the oldest class 08 still in regular service? 1713294579 Hugh Longworth records that the oldest locomtive taken intio BR stock in 1948 was an ex-North Londion Railway Crane tank number 58865, built in...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Given that none of them have yet done 45 days in service (043 has done 32 part days) it is possible that what people did in them in January is still there!

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

The inestimable Alan Williams in "Not the Age of the train" in 1983 (I think the article first appeared in "Modern Railways" Having sung the praises of the PEPs ("Posh Expensive Peooplemovers", he goes on to discuss the new "Unposh Greatly Loathed Incredibly Expensive Steel Train" )- "The new...

Why did Parcels Multiple Units fall out of favour?

I don't think they were called anything really, just "parcels units" They kept their original numbers in the 508xx, 509xx and 550xx series, but were recallsified 130 and 131. Conversely, the 1990s conversions kept their original classifications (101, 105, 114, 120, 127) but got new numbers in...

DPUs existed long before that. GWR DPU No17 of 1936. Class 129 of 1958 Class 128 of 1960 Class 130 of 1966 (converted from class 116) Class 131 (converted from Class 122 in 1971)

    Caledonian Sleeper Layout.

That "Revolutions Trains" pdf shpuld be treated with a large pinch of salt though. It shows the Edinburgh portion next to the loco on the Lowlander, which is wrong in both directions (it is detached from, and attached to, the rear of the Glasgow portion) And it shows the seated accomodation...

Why did Parcels Multiple Units fall out of favour?

Originally parcels were caried in guards vans, at minimal cost other than handling by station staff most of whom would otherwise have been under-employed between trains, but a few spocialised parcels units were built or converted to handle particularly busy flows. Marketed as "Red Star" they...

Used railcard multiple times without having it

An honest belief that you had a railcard may be a mitigating circumstance though (although the rules do say you should have it with you). It certainly helped me when I had to defend a driving-without-insurance case. The car's owner (not me) had forgotten that the renewal date and road tax dates...

    Caledonian Sleeper

We got a partial refund when we complained that the lounge was unavailable in both directions despite paying Club. Firstly because the lift wasn't working at Euston despite being told it was (my wife was in a wheelchair due to an accident that occurred between booking and traveling), and...
