Mod note: thread split from here https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/bus-manufacturer-news-discussion.185467/ Looks like the driver felt a bit chilly - wrapped up in a scarf. Maybe instructed not to put the heating on to conserve energy?...

Bromley North branch - Should it be abandoned?

Following the bridge strike on the branch earlier today, should Network Rail cut its losses and abandon the branch? I note it appears that the branch will reopen tomorrow so the damage is not as substantial as it looked, however my question still stands...

Alexander Y type - why did it have an emergency door at both sides?

As per the thread title. The Y type remained in production for nigh on 20 years and they all seemed to have two rear emergency doors - one on each side. I've never quite figured out why, as other builders contemporary bodywork seemed to only have an offside rear emergency door... Just to...

Level crossing guidance updated by ORR

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) have published updated guidance on the thorny subject of Level Crossings, which IMO is long overdue. Possibly allowing Network Rail more freedom to keep certain crossings open instead of the "we must close them" mantra, which seems to have been the prevailing...

Should all parts the rail network be kept open given the increasing frequency of adverse climatic conditions?

This comment set me thinking along the lines of the thread title. If climate change means that sections of lines are going to frequently require substantial remedial action then should we accept that some bits are just too costly to keep going?

Delay attribution : Opportunity for cost savings?

These posts got me thinking, now that all franchised TOC's are basically fixed fee management contracts could the delay attribution merry-go-round be slimmed down since it is money from the same source (government) just being passed around? I can see that DA would still have a place due to the...

Should TOCs only be able to change fares on set dates?

From this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/can-computer-modelling-be-used-in-the-testing-and-designing-of-timetables-on-a-large-scale.205879/ Basically it appears (from that post above) that some TOCs are ignoring the rules and changing fares outwith the set dates. Is this...
