Diesel Loco in Sidings next to York Station

You can nearly always see at least one DRS loco laying over in those sidings (at least you could up to the Covid problem). This has been the case for many moons and in summer a WCR loco also appeared on occasion as a back up for any failures on the Scarborough steam excursions.

Have TPE finally given up on the Scarborough service

Mr Goodwill has a private graveyard business in Terrington, the Mowthorpe Garden of Rest. Hmm.....

First rolling stock you can remember travelling on?

The memory's a bit fuzzy on this subject but I do remember telling Mr Huskisson to stay in his seat when the train stopped but he knew better and got walloped by a rocket or something!

    Trains struck location cabinet doors

Whilst the circumstances are different, there are similarities with the Ealing disaster of December 1973. Quote from Wiki "The locomotive, Class 52 diesel-hydraulic number 1007 Western Talisman, had spent the previous night at Old Oak Common depot and had had its batteries recharged. A door...

First application for Edinburgh to London Open Access service

Unlikely ash39, too many lines to cross to access and leave the avoider with the attendant conflicts to the many other services using the station. I would think the avoider has a low speed limit for any passenger trains. A non-stop at York train (of which the southbound Flying Scotsman is the...

    Durham Delays 23/03/15

Apparently a man detained under the Mental Health Act after being on the tracks at Durham station. Total shut down of services using this part of ECML from circa 11.40am. Northbound trains held at York were cleared to resume their journeys from about 1.15pm - seems a long time taken to detain...

    Northern Railfans Club Reunion.

Wow! That's something from the past. Great days, great trips, great camaraderie. Can still see Ray Hawley from Goostrey with his Tizer bottle and C B Brown from Cornholme. I think there was a Mr Smith also who arranged the Crewe Works visits. A super club for enthusiasts across the North. Don't...

    Old track plans.

The Signalling Record Society used to publish British Railways Layout Plans of the 1950's from the John Swift Collection. Whilst not being so 'professionally' produced as Quail, they are nevertheless very detailed and well worth having if you can find them. Examples of the titles are seen at...

    British rail class 506s

Quote from Wikipedia In 1981 the Woodhead line was closed east of Hadfield. In December 1984 the remaining section was converted to the standard 25 kV AC overhead system and the Class 506 EMUs were withdrawn following the last run on 7 December. Following withdrawal, unit 59404-59504-59604 was...

    Old semaphore signals

Barnetby's famous semaphores look likely to be going soon. Plenty to choose from there methinks. See http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1399508&highlight=barnetby+semaphores#post1399508

What is the stubby platform at Sheffield for?

Interesting picture sheff1 but as all Cravens units were withdrawn by 1988, it makes the picture circa a quarter of a century old minimum. Tempus fugit or what! The platforms seem very cluttered with equipment in those days. According to Wikipedia, BRUTES went out of use in 1999.

What is the stubby platform at Sheffield for?

As far back as I can remember this arrangement has been there and there has never been platform activity on the 'short' sides. Platforms 3 and 4 which form the outer 'legs' are quite lengthy and are in fact now known as 3,3A and 4, 4A to provide more platform accommodation, generally housing...

First win Intercity West Coast franchise

First Scotrail and TPE are excellent TOCs and I see you have amended your opinion on FGE. In fact, First has done pretty well overall. All in all ushawk, I fear you have hoisted yourself on your own petard!

Best stations for Freight Train Spotting?

Barnetby (near Grimsby). Good flow of freight to and from Immingham Dock PLUS all those gorgeous semaphores! Non-staffed station but adjacent pub, cafe and loos.

    Northern 180 at Northallerton

Rather ironic n'est-ce pas, that the Diesel Hydraulic Class 180 was the one chosen to initially run on the former Western Region lines. Whoever decided to get rid of the Warships and the Westerns etc will be spinning in their graves! Hopefully, these very handsome trains will enjoy much more...

    Use of horns

Thanks for that TDK. Is there a technical reason for this or is it just an anomaly. Either way, the chime is very pleasing to the ear imo.

    Use of horns

Whilst we're on the subject of horns, the Class 91's on the ECML usually sound the normal two tones but occasionally emit a very pleasant chime type sound. Can anyone enlighten me please? Also, I believe that drivers of the DMU's when new, way back, were frequently in bother for playing 'On...
