    Blackpool - Manchester Electrification

This phraseology is common to many construction trades. Not sure why but I think it is an attempt to avoid ambiguity in expressions of quantity. Compare "two fish and chips" and "fish and chips twice". Never ask a contractor for the former!

    ATW Premier Service

We were on holiday in North Wales last week, and as a surprise 'holiday within a holiday' I booked for me and my partner to have a 1 night stay in Cardiff travelling 1st on the premier service both ways to and from Bangor. I know it has been said before on this forum, but I felt I just had to...

Is EC At Seat always this Chaotic??

not sure which way round you mean (maybe that's your point) but if you work in customer service, you should take responsibility for making them feel welcome and wanted.

Is EC At Seat always this Chaotic??

I last travelled on EC 1st a few months ago York-Edinburgh and was quite disappointed with the attitude of one of the catering staff who was Newcastle-based judging by her accent. She did the perfunctory jug waving thing and poured out some of that horrible watery coffee that they do. When she...

    Ribblehead Viaduct

although allegedly this was always a bit of a red herring, exaggerated by BR managers to support their closure case. Since the line is now far busier than it was in the 80s, this bottleneck will perhaps warrant some attention eventually.

Or indeed her, as the case may be.

Could Chiltern move to Berne Gauge?

They tended to have powered slam doors afaik. They slammed closed using pneumatics, but were opened manually from the inside. They closed with a force that could take your arm off, let alone your finger. I'd be interested in the risk assessment for introducing these to the UK!

Possible fleet reorganisation for new Northern franchise

I share the concerns expressed by others about tram-trains. The Leeds-Harrogate-York line is, I believe, under particular threat. It is due for S&T renewal, and it could well suit NR if this could be done at lower cost that would be necessary for heavy rail. The prime mover in this regard is...

    Hartlepool scrap trains

NR have also had problems with the Crossley Evans scrap trains from Shipley, when these have been carelessly loaded with flappy bits of sheet metal which have contacted the OHLE and brought the line to a halt for hours. This has happened more than once. Although in fairness, this is not relevant :)

    Skipton HST going to 225

That would involve a very awkward reversal with the train having to proceed through dockfield junction then reverse wrong line back to shipley east.

    Skipton HST going to 225

I have some questions about this: Additional services in the peak: I knew this was in the pipeline, but what are Northern going to use to run these trains? There is already DMU substitution on Airedale/Wharfedale in the morning peak (normally a growly Perkins 158). I always put this down to a...

    Skipton HST going to 225

Hooray. I'm astonished that they put in extra boosters just to allow LHCS on the Airedale!

Least favourite stretch of railway line in the UK?

Hi Folks. I've finally got round to posting something: Mine would have to be Stalybridge - Guide Bridge - Ardwick on TPE. Diverge from the main line at Stalybridge onto a sinuous former freight line. Very very slow. Join a former mainline at what was once a major junction at the much reduced...
