Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

We can only give the RAIB our insights - https://forms.dft.gov.uk/raib-incident-reporting/

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

Having followed this thread, seems to me the majority of rail staff just repeat the mantra that 'rules' say pax must never go onto the track; I recall one poster claiming he'd prefer to defecate in his trousers than break railway by-laws

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

If the eye-witness reports are true, the driver certainly didn't think so, having repeatedly sought permission to move into the station at caution to allow a safe pax egress. We can only wait for the RAIB report.

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

So far, the only Southeastern employee to come out of this with any credit is the driver who asked and asked the signaller to be allowed to proceed at caution into the station under emergency permissive working

Your views: should we have first class on trains at all?

Having done 8 years of PBO-KGX in FC, I can say - + Never seen any sense of entitlement from genuine ticket holders. But have heard every BS story under the sun from pax "trying it on" to sit in FC when tickets were inspected. I could spot 'bother' from a mile-off, no doubt so could the ticket...

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

I have a suspicion the comms that night between London Fire Brigade and Southeastern 'Gold' command would make a sailor blush

Your views: should we have first class on trains at all?

I remember a economist saying that to maintain First and Standard fare differentials on airlines, you had to provide superfluous features in First and deny the essentials in Standard. Same as the trains, really!

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

You are left wondering if it was the London Fire Brigade who took the fabled 'initiative' to rescue the pax in hour 4 while SouthEastern Gold command would still be flapping about until a 5th or 6th hour had passed? The ATOC document only states what many posters here have said, my emphasis -...

It's a open question whether all pax in these trains would be able to understand English, both the signage and the drivers announcements. There must be a case for automatic announcements to be recorded in 5 or 6 of the most widely spoken languages of Londoners.

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

Perhaps the lesson learned from this will be that the net lowest risk option is to trigger a 'proceed to station at caution' directive from Gold command and signallers can then inform drivers, with the message being repeated on social media to inform pax. It's clear that with the vast majority...

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

Why not, when you could justify as Emergency permissive working to facilitate a safe evacuation and the train entering the station would have proceeded at caution?

First East Coast (new Open Access Operator) to be standard class only?!

I was thinking of at seat cooked meals, as per current menu on Virgin West Coast - Slow cooked tender lamb with root vegetables, topped with sliced potatoes. Inspired by our celebrity chef, Bryn Williams. Sustainably sourced smoked haddock and basmati rice, served with a spicy tomato sauce...

First East Coast (new Open Access Operator) to be standard class only?!

If this service was to pick-up the price-sensitive traveller, it would be smart for the main operators to look at business and civil service pax who are banned from buying first class. If a standard carriage was reserved for those paying full-fare standard, call it Standard-Plus, which had at...

I expect the RAIB report will find that 'Gold' command was in chaos

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

I read from someone who claimed to have been on the train that the detraining occurred after pax had waited an hour from the previous announcement only to be informed that nobody at Southeastern could decide what to do. Enough was enough.

Are drivers really not told anything at all by the controllers for 90mins or more, or do they just choose not to inform pax?

Passengers abandon train at Lewisham with 3rd rails still live.

One option to address 'gapped' trains or 3rd-rail icing would to install hi-voltage capacitors. These would be charged from normal running, but would hold enough charge to power the train for, say 500m, to move past the break in 3rd rail supply or arcing. A capacitor pack would need to be about...

Do drivers get paid O/T when they're sitting all night in the cab of train that is stuck due to 3rd rail issues or signal faults?

If you Google, there are some articles and patents on using an induction coil ahead of the shoe. In the same way as an induction hob, this heats the metal rail just enough to break the ice/metal bond layer and allow the ice to be scraped off even while running at up to 30mph.
