    Vancouver freight photo viewpoints

I'm off to Vancouver. Is there anywhere close to the city where I could phot freight trains in reasonable volume but would be scenic enough to have a picnic and for my wife to be happy to sit around

    Helsinki visit

I am planning to visit Helsinki. I visited for the day once before on a cruise ship itinerary and spent an hour or so photting trains at the main station (luckily two ICs departed and one arrived in that time). However this will be a slightly longer visit and I am very much into freight...

    Ontario freight

I'm going outside my normal comfort zone and area of major expertise of Switzerland/France/Germany to New York and Toronto this summer (Cunard to New York). I'll be staying south west of Toronto close to the railway running north east towards Toronto. It looks like there is some good freight...

Rhätische Bahn stock developments (bad news)

Seven of the eight new Bit 2nd class universal driving trailers have been accepted onto the RhB books since January, joining the six AGZ Ait 1st class driving trailers delivered last year. As is already known, this will eventually decrease the number of locos required for RhB services...

    Brand new 700.1

at East Croydon the other day I saw a Thameslink 700.1 on a Littlehampton service that is so new, the edge of the wheel tyres were still the 'just fabricated' 'bauxite' colour, and each wheel still had a white label on it! Can't remember ever seeing that in over 50 years of gricing!

Rhätische Bahn loco haulage round-up and future plans

Here is my best stab at clarifying the present and future RhB situation. Hope to help anyone thinking of visiting for the first time ‘before it’s too late’ as 2018/9 could see a lot of change All the usual disclaimers apply for anything I have forgotten to include, and comments on loco...

Swiss railways coaches and train formations.

As the thread 'Switzerland - where to go if you're a railway enthusiast' has deviated quite a lot from its original topic (even into Germany) and as there seems to be a good deal of interest in Swiss stock, I thought I would open a new thread to try and pull the rolling stock discussion away...

Railways that loop away from town then back in

I decided to start this thread but had great difficulty finding a concise title! But the question is: Last week I went on the Ipswich - Felixstowe branch, I think for the first time ever. It leaves Ipswich main station and describes a huge arc northwest and north of the town before...

Swiss rolling stock - big changes in progress

I've created a new thread but started it off with a reference to a comment in the 'RBe540' thread from a few days ago. Regardless of traction, the Chur St Moritz line ought to be visited this year - especially by those of us who prefer 'traditional' types of loco hauled stock, as the new...

    car hire for line siding

slightly off topic (perhaps) but relevant to railway line siding. I'm planning a part train/part hire car linesiding trip in Switzerland in September Has anyone had experience of car hire in western Europe since the UK DVLA changed the rules about counterpart driving licences? TIA

Zermatt railways on UK BBC TV Drama

Rather late in the day I discovered that the BBC Drama 'The Night Manager' (based on a John Le Carré novel) features railways (and magnificent mountain views) I've managed to see the Episode1 (where the second half is set and filmed in Zermatt.) on catch up TV via computer, having missed its...

    German tariff areas

There seem to have been a number of similar queries about cheap ticketing in Germany . It is always worth genning up on the tariff areas of Germany (and other countries such as Switzerland), as the regional tariff areas are where you tend to get 24 hour ranger tickets etc A long exhaustive...

    Swiss Panoramic Trains

Following the earlier thread on Swiss scenic routes I thought I would open a new thread specifically on this subject, as I noticed that Swiss Travel System has come up with a new marketing package called ‘Panoramic Journeys’ – a list of 10 routes – some of which are more than one line tagged...

    Train compositions web sites

The question about Brussels and the link to the Benelux train compositions web site makes me wonder if anyone has inventoried such web sites for the main European railways. The Swiss version is excellent - but does not include all local trains so misses some loco hauled There is Czech site...

SNCF old replacing new! - Return of 67400

Bucking the trend, 67400 are to return on July 1 to hauling the St Chely d'Apcher steel trains on the Ligne des Causses. RFF has slapped a ban on 75000/75400 south of Neussaurges as they wreck the bullhead rail! 3 BB67400 from STF Picardie (67530/579/597, all green) will run the Mon/Tue/Thurs...
