    Sounds of the Nineties

I agree with Cowley, Absolute Radio 90s is a great place to go for 90s music. There are some great playlists on YouTube as well!

TRIVIA: The shortest journeys that cover the most counties

I used to be addicted to doing the Hokey Cokey, but I turned myself around and that's what it's all about.

    Your favourite country pubs

I second the vote for the Beer Engine in Newton St Cyres. We used to get the train there from Exeter and then walk back. Great beer! I also like The Crispin in Great Longstone, and The Pack Horse in Little Longstone. They're a short walk off the Monsal Trail, a footpath on the old track bed...

    Railway Pubs

The two pubs on stations I often go to are the one on Sheffield station (mentioned previously) but, more often, The Mallard on Worksop station. It's small but friendly, with a great choice of beer, cider and crisps (it often wins CAMRA awards) and they have beer festivals a few times a year!

ECML OLE problems at Retford yet again (09/03)

I think that the only way around this is to use alternative traction on the ECML to rule out any fault of the class 91s. So in the next few weeks if the TOCs use 86s, 87s, the 89 from Barrow Hill, 90s, and some 37s/47s/50s/56s/60s/Deltics/pairs of 20s/A4s then it will help to narrow the...

    I Hate Pork Pies

I don't mind a pork pie, but I'm with you on the jelly front. I don't understand what's nice about having jelly in it. The ones without jelly are fine!

    Fawlty Towers

The end of the episode "Basil the Rat" had us in stitches when we first saw it! https://youtu.be/K_q4S7lZeik "Would you care for a rat...?"

    Best British Sitcoms

Thanks for the update Strathclyder, that's great news! I agree with you Karl, the Beeb ought to give it another run out. I know may people who've never seen it but have loved it when they've been shown it.

    Paul Merton, Secret Stations

Ah, the Beer Engine in Newton St Cyres. I was at Exeter University and a few of us used to get the train there, have a few pints, then walk/stagger back. Lovely beer it was too. A couple of years after I'd left I was working in a pub near Hemel Hempstead. A man came in and said how much he...

    Best British Sitcoms

They did show a lot of it, years ago on BBC2. I was the same as you at the time. I'd seen the adverts for it on telly, thought it didn't look up to much, but then watched some clips on Youtube and have been a huge fan since! I even emailed Dave (the comedy channel) a few years ago suggesting...

Train toilets being used as private compartments..

This thread reminds me of the old joke: Three lawyers and three engineers were travelling by train to the same meeting. At the station the lawyers buy a ticket each but the engineers buy just one between them. When asked why, the engineers coyly said "You'll see." They all board the train...

    smacking

There will always be those who had no physical punishment when they were children, and those who did. Of those who had no physical punishment when they were children, some will grow up with good morals, and some will not. Of those who had physical punishment when they were children, some...

    Favourite Station to Interchange at

Funnily enough, with the time off I've got between Christmas and New Year, we're thinking of going to Sheffield just to go to The Tap. They have a fantastic range of beers, and even a menu for all of the bottles in their fridges. Plus a good view of the station. On a related note I live in...

    The Apprentice 2014

It seems like the sort of task where, one year, the team would be castigated for not following the brief, and another year praised for their initiative. I've never been a religious watcher of this series (mostly because some of the contestants are so full of themselves, but lack even the most...

    Euromillions

I really can't understand why any of these people go public though. What on earth is the point? I have heard of some people who won a big prize and went public. They have (apparently) had begging letters, people just turning up on their doorstep wanting money and kidnap threats made against...
