Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

Having travelled widely in Europe, add Spain and Portugal to the list of graffiti "tagged" rolling stock, mainly emu and dmu, but not necessarily urban local stock. They do seem to be very slow to remove it, though at Ronda last month someone had at least cleaned it from the windows so we could...

    Great Britain VI 20/4/2024

It was good they ran the train as planned and didn't get diverted via Hereford. I think the Heart of Wales line takes some beating scenery-wise, and a lovely day for it too 1713883344 It's a great soundtrack on that video and weather looked glorious.

    ASLEF strikes W/c 6th May

I see Aslef members at Avanti, Chiltern and WM trains will strike on Weds 8/5/2024. What is the likelihood of disruption on these operators on the preceding day, based on previous similar strikes? (I need to be in London by 1300hrs).

    Great Britain VI 20/4/2024

Looks like it didn't follow the train down the central Wales route but went via Cardiff to Llandeilo Jn. Path and timings on Real Time Trains.

Could the Heart of Wales line host more regular steam trips?

I had thought Saphos from Crewe or maybe Vintage Train's from Birmingham. VT has two castles to start with!!

    Pacers on Long Distance Routes

I think it was a 75mph diagram as I've done the same route Worcester to Bristol some years ago. It was quite exhilarating charging down the main line!

Could the Heart of Wales line host more regular steam trips?

Yesterday's Great Britain VI demonstrated that it's possible to run a double headed steam train with 10 carriages from Craven Arms to Llandeilo Junction without deisel assistance. And quite late in the day. Is it feasible to run from Crewe at, say 0830am, to Llandeilo by steam, stopping to pick...

There used to be ice creams etc in the park cafe opposite (not sure if that's still there).

Madrid to Lisbon in 2024 - possible timings if a service were to run

That's all very well but as both Portugal and Spain use Iberian gauge it would make sense in the meantime to utilise existing routes already serviceable and run on them bi-mode trains capable of running on electric or deisel power. Just as an aside, as freight still runs across the border on...

    Interregional in Romania

When we were at Brasov last year there was a train for Bucurest (EMU) going before our (loco hauled) Inter Regional train and when asked the guard said interrail wasn't valid as it's a "private train", by which we took it to mean private firm running it. Incidentally we got ticked off once or...

Heritage Railways' Policies on Lineside Photographers in Hi-Vis

Yes agree, there were several lineside on Friday for this weekend's SVR steam gala, all with massive numbers on the back of their high viz vests. I saw no trespassers: everyone else was behind the boundary fences, which is good news.

    Great Britain VI 20/4/2024

Seems a great idea, I wish they'd take that approach on other tours. But how did the electric doors work and the Aircon without the 47? Does anyone know?

    Great Britain VI 20/4/2024

Just seen a video of this passing Bucknell on the Heart of Wales line. Double headed Black 5's no diesel on rear!!! GREAT!!! Any ideas why they dropped the diesel? Isn't it required to power the consist a/c and electric doors? If not then why do all those other excursions using mk2 aircons...

Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

It seems a bit bizarre that the UK almost always zealously followed EU directives on various things, H&S included, however now it is no longer part of the EU the same mindset seems to apply. Ironic really. Not that H&S should not be taken very seriously, it just seems that on the continent there...

Early colour photos of Mk2 carriages in maroon livery

Does anyone have knowledge of original 1960's photos of BR Mk2 carriages in maroon livery? (Preferably in colour). AFAIK these were only FK's, everything else was corporate blue/grey. Any references to books/magazines greatly appreciated.

XC trains behing heavily used by Wolverhampton to Birmingham commuters: how could this be resolved?

It's more difficult in the morning peak from Wolverhampton to Euston as trains are picking up long distance passengers. Maybe skip the New Street stop for alternate Wolverhampton starters and run non-stop to International via Tame Bridge and Stechford? Also not really commuter related, but I...

Cross Country cutting out Winchester and Basingstoke stops

Winchester is far more likely to be a day trip destination from the midlands than Southampton so it's important to maintain stops to set down and pick up. Missing out Basingstoke makes journeys to (eg): Salisbury line stations complicated from the midlands, unless you go via Bristol.
