Luggage on trains… bikes now take priority?

One thing a lot of people either aren't aware of, or are unwilling to do, is put luggage underneath seats. On the 755s, for example, there's quite a lot of room under them due to the cantilevered seat design.

Are there any male automated announcements on trains?

DB Regio have used a male voice (Ingo Ruff) on board their trains in Germany for many years. I believe they now use a text-to-speech version of it. Now that I think of it, ONE used a male voice on board their trains in the mid-2000s, before being replaced by Julie Berry.

Un-user friendly railway: Wrongly branded trains

The sole remaining /2 on the GN, 201, does indeed have this branding.

    Railway Slang

Cambridge has the Cupboard and the Gasworks for the loops either side of the station.

    Trivia: outdated posters and signage

Unless they've been changed fairly recently, quite a few stations on the Cambridge - Ipswich line (Dullingham, Newmarket, Thurston and Elmswell from memory) still have Anglia Railways signage.

    Information phrases which grate

"This service has been cancelled due to waiting for a train crew member." It isn't waiting for them if it's been cancelled!

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

And porters are on hand on every platform at every station to help you with your ten suitcases onto the train!

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

Shown as London Terminals but valid on Greater Anglia services only, which from Cambridge is only to Liverpool Street. When you select London Terminals on the TVMs at Cambridge, a window pops up warning that GA only tickets are not valid to King's Cross, and you have to close it to continue...

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

A GA-only ticket from Cambridge to London must be valid to King's Cross because it says London, despite the ticket machines having a pop-up window warning you that it isn't when you select it.

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

That you can't walk through the train between carriages and have to jump off and run down the platform instead. (I know this is actually true in some cases but I've seen it many, many times with fully-gangwayed units!)

    Uniforms, the smartest and scruffiest?

I think Westbahn in Austria is a contender for the worst. Jeans are a step too far in my book, and the hat is straight out of Thunderbirds!

Passengers getting confused by different TOCs or liveries.

Don't forget earlier this year during the Kings Cross works when 700s were diagrammed on a handful of Ely - Kings Cross services, plus a Cambridge - Kings Lynn peak extra. On more than one occasion I saw somebody let one go at Cambridge because "Thameslink don't go to King's Lynn" or "That's the...

    Very long on board announcements

I like it when guards do this, but it does make me laugh when they go through the list on autopilot and announce a connection back to where the train has just come from.

Trivia: Consecutive Trains to Different Terminating Destinations

I've been asked for the next train to "London Liverpool Lime Street" before!

    Very long on board announcements

I had a Southern OBS last year whose announcements lasted the full length of Victoria - Clapham and Gatwick - Three Bridges. They weren't even any good, it was a Portsmouth/Bognor splitter and he kept getting the two portions muddled up!

Trivia: The train to 'XXX', calling at 'XXX'

During engineering works with trains diverted via the Hertford Loop, I've noticed Kings Cross trains at Cambridge displayed as 'via Hertford North' despite them not calling there.

Most effort/work spent on a railway project that ultimately never happened?

Whilst it's not a project which never happened at all, you've reminded me of the Newmarket & Chesterford Railway. It opened in 1848, and the section between Chesterford and Six Mile Bottom closed permanently in 1851, one of the first line closures in British history. To top it all off, one of...

Trivia: Stations/Lines that receive a better service during times of disruption

I remember some years ago, Enfield Town received extra trains to Liverpool Street calling only at Seven Sisters. This was during engineering work on the West Anglia, I believe there were replacement buses from Enfield Town to stations further north.

Trivia - Furthest you've seen someone carried beyond their intended stop

Not an overcarry as such, but you've reminded me of the old Peterborough - Liverpool Street via Ipswich service which ran until December 2010. On one occasion I was at Ely and the Kings Cross train had been cancelled. A few minutes later a 170 rolled in with 'London Liverpool Street' on the...

Why don't the UK TOCs have an "audio brand"?

I always liked ÖBB's station announcement jingle. Alas, it's just been replaced by a new, vastly inferior one!
