    Stations With Largest Step Down.

Helsby platform 1. There is a hump on it now but only covers one set of doors so if you are towards the end of the train it's a fair drop.

Linslade Tunnel - Why so architecturally elegant?

Sutton tunnel on the Chester to Warrington BQ line looks well. Photo sourced from http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/s/sutton_tunnel/ Photo by Paul Wright

    Ellesmere Port Docks Lines/Sidings

Very interesting. As a child our family home backed onto the Helsby to Mouldsworth line and a lot of the Ellesmere Port freight headed up that way. I certainly remember the traffic from Stanlow and Vauxhalls passing the end of our garden and at times a lot of chemical freight, coal and stone...

    Stations to avoid and why

Avoid Helsby if you are a person of reduced mobility. You can only access Platform 1 without having to resort to the footbridge. No lifts or barrow crossings. No station toilets. That said it is a pleasant place to be and there is a nice tap room open from Thursday to Sunday.

I’d imagine it is busy this morning as an alternative route to Crewe via Runcorn.

A bit of freight heading up and down during the Acton Grange work. Log trains to Chirk and sand trains to Encirc at Elton are both traversing the curve.

How would you Rate your Local Station?

My local: Helsby Setting: Located in the village centre. View out towards Frodsham marshes overlooking the Growhow fertilizer plant and a wind farm. (5/10) Architecture: Pleasant Victorian buildings. Old ticket office and waiting room converted to a Beer Tap Room open Thursday to Sunday...

I expect demand has been quite high today on the TFW service?

    Newton-le-Willows

I could be wrong but isn't Newton classed as a major park and ride? There is a large (fee I believe) car park adjacent to the station facilitating commuters etc that couldn't have been constructed at Earlestown.

Not sure, but I have picked up this picture off the Helsby Memories Facebook page with the last service from Liverpool to Chester on May 5th 1975 waiting at Runcorn.

All spaces gone after 0721 and that is with the single Manchester service with TFW, never mind the Liverpool and the Leeds services starting soon. Glad I am in walking distance.

It was extended by about 10 or so spaces on some land that was used by Network Rail as a site for the recent footbridge overhaul. No sign of a multi storey and with the local council about to start charging to use the car park at the top of Station Avenue it could get messy in the streets...

If you consider from Frodsham or Helsby it would cost you a fiver in petrol and a minimum of £3.80 for a return crossing on the new bridge, a £30 per week commute cost isn't bad at all.

Apologies. It is a summary of the new fares. Perhaps better if I post them to the Fares forum. All prices from Helsby. SDR £7.50. CDR £6.00 Single £5.90
