Where have you been in Europe by rail?

I went Interrailing in the mid 1980's, largely because my uncle had done the same thing a decade earlier, and couldn't stop talking about it. He brought back lots of timetables with exotic sounding places listed, which really fired my interest as a 10 year old who liked both trains and...

    Train Travel in Italy

There are plenty of ticket machines in Civitavecchia, and I found them very easy to use when we were there a few years ago. There is an English language option, and it's very clear. We ended up on the top deck of a very comfortable and pretty empty double deck train. On the way back the train...

So those others didn't hear you mention anything about compensation either? Yet you claimed :D

    11:50 Swift Holyhead-Dublin

True. There must be a sizeable number who do though, surely?

They're just throwing money away with such a silly connection. I reckon they are stuck with it, though until the next timetable change.

New security checks at Brussels Midi and Antwerp for TGV, ICE and Thalys

It will be neither achievable nor effective. It's a complete waste of time, effort and money.

    11:50 Swift Holyhead-Dublin

Yeah, I've got a full set of printed ATW timetables for reference! I think the problem is that this is enough when things are running to time, but there's no flexibility for much of a late arrival. Unlike at Fishguard maybe, when tickets cna be looked at and then passengers can just hurry up the...

    11:50 Swift Holyhead-Dublin

Things don't seem to be so bad at Fishguard. Perhaps it's the fact that passengers need a bus in Holyhead to get to the ferries? I've arrived in Fishguard 15mins before the ferry departed and been OK.

Perhaps ATW will have a rethink on the conenctions once they see how much they are having to pay out!

So did you take the slow ferry instead?

Eurostar Direct St Pancras to Amsterdam

You're right. In my opinion Luton is no more a London airport than Bristol is.

    TGV Rebranding

I hope they do have a change of mind, and ideally within the next few hours :)

    TGV Rebranding

I find this a perplexing move. It seems confusing and the distillation of a name that has become recognisable all over the world. I don't see the point.

Eurostar Direct St Pancras to Amsterdam

I used Luton once. Never again. It took me 4.5 hours to get form Central London to Central Amsterdam via a bus, a train, another bus, a flight then another train. Far too much hassle and a generally uncomfortable airport.

Eurostar Direct St Pancras to Amsterdam

I believe that there will be a market for rail between London and Amsterdam. There is now. That doesn't mean that services will have the same effect as has been felt on the Lonond to Paris or London to Brussels routes. Flying will still be attractive, particularly so for those who are living or...

Eurostar Direct St Pancras to Amsterdam

Some people just don't like flying. Some dislike all the hassles of security, luggage allowances, restrictions on liquids and all of that stuff. Some just like trains! Speed isn't everything to everyone. There's also comfort, convenience and enjoyment to think about. Still, I'd think that most...

Very poor train and ferry connections at Rosslare Harbour in Ireland.

I do hope that this is permanent. As I said earlier, it would be an improvement not just for foot passengers, but for those of us sad cases who like a night out in Carmarthen from time to time!

Why do Eurostar services finish so early in the evening?

It's nice to have a choice between demand based pricing on high speed trains and fixed pricing on slower services. It wouldn't work with the Channel Tunnel, though.

Why do Eurostar services finish so early in the evening?

I don't think that there is a lot of room for fares to fall as a result of competiion on this route. Even if it did happen, then my suspicions are that the competition would merely lead to companies finding it unsustainable to runs ervices, so that we'll be left with a similar situation with...
