Ian Allan – Social, Economic and Sexist History on a Combined volume

I'm pretty sure that there were female booking office staff and station clerks in the 50's. This comes form the large numbe rof books and magazines I've managed to read over the years, particularly about GWR and South Wales operations.

Ian Allan – Social, Economic and Sexist History on a Combined volume

Females did work for BR in the 1950's and the 1960's. In tuen witht the times, they tended to do clerical and secretarial work, and would leave when they started a family. Indeed, many employers in those days stated that on marriage, women would have to leave. They were very different times, and...

That £7 is a bit on the high side for me, but I might go up to £2 as an investment :)

    Too many railway Magazines?

I think there are too many. The market for traditional paper magazines must have shrunk thanks to the internet. I don't buy nearly as many as I did in the 1990's, when I was a regular RAIL and Modern Railways reader, with occasional purchases of the Railway Gazette and other titles. When I do...

    The end of RAIL MAGAZINE?

I don't think Alan Williams is relevant any more. Not that I read MR much these days. He used to have plenty of good stuff to report and say, from his days on BR's design panel, and, as has been mentioned, from his regular travels around the network on Post Office business. Now that he has...

The case of the disappearing railway magazines!

I'd expect any store to try and safeguard stock that seems to be prone to theft.

The case of the disappearing railway magazines!

I'm sure it's down to the store management as to what is displayed behind the counter, plus what magazines and how many are in stock. Swansea's store has a much wider range of titles than Llanelli, but it's much bigger so that makes sense anyway.

    The end of RAIL MAGAZINE?

Boring and sycophantic are good words to describe how I felt about the last few issues of RAIL that I bought before giving up completely. I didn't see very much analysis or insight, just a platform for senior figures in the industry to waffle on about nothing much in particular. I may be a...

    The end of RAIL MAGAZINE?

We are all different, but I didn't see Modern Railways as an industry magazine in the 1980's and early 1990's. In those pre internet days I found it very good for news, and I recall some very interesting features on freight operations. Generally, there was plenty to interest me in each issue...

    The end of RAIL MAGAZINE?

I gave up on it around six years ago, and my interest in the type of articles the magazine produced had been on the wane for some time before that. I think it was a bot too much of a [product for the enthusiast in the mid 1990's, but around the end of the decade I started buying it again. It...

Ian Allan Bookshops to close? (turns out it's just Cardiff closing)

I went into the Manchester Ian Allan in November. Compared to Cardiff it seemed very poky! As an aside, it looked as though one of the cafes that used to be on the right on the way down to IA had disappeared. Has Waitrose taken it;s place? I'd had a few snacks and meals in there over the years!

Ian Allan Bookshops to close? (turns out it's just Cardiff closing)

I'll still be sad to see the Cardiff store go, whatever the reason. There's always been people in there when I've visited it, but whether the store is viable is debatable. I've never had to queue up to pay!

Ian Allan Bookshops to close? (turns out it's just Cardiff closing)

Presumably they see either see it as a flagship store worth retaining, or perhaps more likely, it turns a reasonable profit while the others don't. I don't know, though, it doesn't make much sense to me to keep one store while closing all the other ones down. But what do I know anyway?!

Ian Allan Bookshops to close? (turns out it's just Cardiff closing)

I'll miss the Cardiff store. It's spacious and comfortable in there. I always popped in when in Cardiff, and I bought something there 95% of the time. I don't get the same enjoyment from browsing online, and I was prepared to pay more for the enjoyment. I'm probably in a small minority in that...

March 2014 Modern Railways below standard

I stopped buying Modern Railways some time ago as it seemed to have become too technical for me. In fact, I was forming an opinion that it had become more like an official industry publication than something for someone with a general interest in railways. Prior to this I had read the magazine...

    Hamleys

I have great memories of being in Hamleys when I was 9 in 1975. They seemed to have a huge section for model railways, but I suppose I must have been a bit smaller then so everything appeared much bigger!
