First Great Western - Trainee Drivers

Finally got a response from FGW...Only got a borderline pass on the Group Bordon so I'm SOL. :(

First Great Western - Trainee Drivers

We're not suggesting you need to be able to call over the entire route from Paddington to Penzance, but having an idea of key points wouldn't hurt.

    Attire for assesment

Veering slightly off-topic, having spoken to some of our DSMs, the common theme is that they're of the opinion there are plenty of people who'd make good drivers, but can't handle the psychometric tests, and plenty of people who make rubbish drivers, but pass the tests with flying colours..

You can also download a copy of the relevant Sectional Appendix from the Network Rail site, though note that they're only updated to 1st December 2012.

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

The latter...E-mailed 'em again today to chase it up...

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the result...I did the first stage (Group Bordon and Trainability for Rules and Procedures) in Reading back in September and I'm still waiting, despite chasing up numerous times. :(

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Pretty much given up on FGW now, to be honest. Took the Group Bordon and Trainability for Rules and Procedures in Reading (for Paddington) back in September...haven't heard a word since. And chasing it up with HR results in, "When we know, you'll know" responses.

    Chiltern Railways Human Resources

It helps if you get the name of the Department right too. Chiltern are one of those rare companies that still call it Personnel.

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Still on "Invited to assessment" here...And my Stage 1 was on 5th September at 14:45

    staff parking

Marylebone has (limited) staff parking at the front of the station in Melcombe Place, though this is also used by Network Rail and occasionally by contractors carrying out work in the station. A specific permit is required, which has to be renewed each year. Paddington has a staff car park...

Public's misconceptions of the railway..Driving is easy... funny and aggravating..

I challenge you to find "cruise control" on the vast majority of the current *MU fleets. Think you'll find it's mostly limited to locos, BICBW.

    FCC shunting job

I was considering it, until I looked at the "Further Particulars" and it appeared to be more of a glorified train cleaner and points operator role than a depot driver! (That, and I wouldn't be able to get to any of the depots in question in a reasonable time).

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

There definitely seem to be communications issues between FGW Personnel and FirstGroup Resourcing. I did the first part of the assessment three months ago today and have heard nothing, despite chasing it up multiple times and getting a "When we know you'll know" response. :(

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Still no news here, and I sat the first part of the assessment on 05/09 :( HR are still saying the results are with the recruiting manager...

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Trying a different tack, has anyone who applied for Paddington done the second stage (reactions and structured interview) yet? Getting fed up of waiting now, as Monday will mark two months since I did the first stage, and FirstGroup HR just keep fobbing me off with "you'll know when we know." :(

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Still no news here. Applied for Paddington back in August and had the Stage 1 in Reading at the start of September...

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

It's essentially down to the number of applicants they need to process. The day I did my Stage 1, they had three groups of around 25 people each, which was all the function room in the hotel could comfortably hold.

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

Paddington. Did the GB and TRP on 5th September in Reading and we were told the second stage was taking place from the 13th, so we'd hear "soon" regardless of the outcome!

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

E-mailed First again yesterday...Got another "still waiting for the results" response...since September!? :-(

First Great Western Trainee drivers, Anyone heard back?

I've only done the Group Bordon and TRP so far. E-mailed central resourcing 2 weeks ago and got the "waiting to hear from the recruiting manager" response.
