    Visit to Long Marston

This is 5 months old so may not be entirely accurate in terms of what's currently stored there, but here's some drone footage of the site:

    Penzance to Thurso by train

I suspect that has something to do with both Scotland north of Inverness being underestimated in size (when I cycled LEJOG this area took 1.5 of the 9 days involved), and that the line goes on a lengthy detour around Dornoch firth, rather than crossing it straight from Tain like the A9 does...

Avanti to Preston and middle of the night cab to Edinburgh

The trip report seems to have gone viral, and now has a BBC article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66925314

Avanti to Preston and middle of the night cab to Edinburgh

An interesting thread on Twitter from user James Noksie, detailing how his train was cancelled at Preston, other evening services were either full or also cancelled, so cabs were raked in to get all passengers onwards. He made it okay and looks like he'll get a full ticket refund, but...

Why people don't travel by train...

This pretty much sums it up I think. However I would add that while the car can be cheaper for regular users outside of well-connected cities, having a car has the extra costs of ownership and maintenance, so if you don't travel terribly often and live in a town connected by rail, buses...

Final XC HST (1627 Plymouth - Leeds) 18/09

Reminds me of the Flying Banana railtour 4 years ago, which got into Plymouth around 10pm: the hotel I stayed in had a number of other guests from that tour, and on the journey back to London the next day (Sunday) it was very easy to sit with others on the tour (the tour actually gave free GWR...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

I'm going to Aberdeen 1st class on Friday 18th August on the 10:00 from KGX, and returning on the 09:52 the following Monday. Are the menus normally the same every time on each particular service and thus predictable or will I just have to wait and see?

    Bad day on SouthEastern 23/12

There was a broken down train near Aylesford yesterday, I wasn't travelling on that line but I was held at the level crossing around 10:40 (while cycling), and the barriers mysteriously lifted despite no train passing over for a few minutes. When I got infront of a computer I saw RTT showing the...

What do you value about First Class on long distance services?

I've twice done the Highland Chieftain and KGX-Aberdeen services throughout both ways, always in 1st class in both directions for the first 3 reasons in the poll. I don't always get the quiet atmosphere as it's often full (I've reserved seat of choice though), though mainly south of Edinburgh. I...

What's the most grim rail service available in the UK?

I agree that part of the North Kent line isn't pleasant, but the NK line from Dartford into London is even worse for every reason you state above (although substitute chalk quarries for even bleaker housing estates).

Trivia: Nearest station you haven't used?

Either Hollingbourne or Wateringbury, depending on which one is closer but for me they are the nearest stations not used on their respective lines.

Has anyone made a journey by train in the last few weeks purely for leisure purposes?

Having just been on holiday in the west country I made a fair few journeys for leisure there, including especially on the reopened Dartmouth steam railway, which is also running a non-stop service between Paignton and Kingswear. I'm guessing this is to avoid complicating their train reservations.

    Famous people on trains

Yes what she said was a surprise, but I didn't speak up about the contrary in the same conversation. Hopefully the guard doesn't mention it to the DfT, although it will inevitably have come up in his mess room gossip.

    Famous people on trains

Had Kathy Burke sit behind me on the 10:04 Paddington - Penzance train yesterday (I got off at Exeter and don't know where she was heading). She had a 1st class ticket but was sat in the back of the Standard carriage next to the 1st bit, I know this because the inspector asked why she wasn't in...

What's your longest journey on a 150 ( or noisy equivalent ) in recent times?

When I was at Uni and living in Bath I remember 150s often did Weymouth services to Bristol and their extensions; the Great Malvern-Weymouth service in particular is over 4 hours long, although I only had got it between Bath and Weymouth a few times and once went to Worcester and back on one...

Virgin Friday evening first class offering

On the chieftain yesterday I was in 1st class and someone sat there wanting to upgrade. When the inspector came by he said for his journey the upgrade only applies at weekends (When no hot food is served) and he would have to pay £200 for a full 1st ticket. The guard did allow him to finish his...

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Not sure how appropiate this is but it's nice to see how much talk can come out of a franchise's 1st class meal.:idea:

What's the rarest working you've ever had?

When a Virgin voyager went to the Swanage railway I went on that one way, would that count?
