    Train services to ferry terminals

Heysham service was a through train from Leeds back in the 1960s. Caught it once to connect with the ferry to Belfast.

TRIVIA: Lines with only the odd passenger train to keep up route knowledge

A XC service travels this route in the opposite direction each evening just before 22.00 ( Southampton to York) I think most people would regard the Chesterfield - Barrow Hill - Beighton - Sheffield route as the “Old Road” too. Certainly I’ve heard railway men refer to it as such. An early...

Flooding disruption around Sheffield and Doncaster (7 November onwards)

Northern’s Hull crews have knowledge of the route via Selby but it isn’t being used. Clearly there is no substitute between Doncaster and Mexborough, however Northern have not sourced buses to serve some or all stations on the route, and, no, the roads are not blocked. No buses Google to...

Flooding disruption around Sheffield and Doncaster (7 November onwards)

However, there is a frequent (upto every ten minutes) X78 (as mentioned) bus service running between Doncaster Interchange (adjacent to station), Rotherham Interchange (3 minute walk to the closed Rotherham Central) and Sheffield Interchange ( over the road from Midland Station). Takes 1h 20...

Flooding: 26th October - Stafford - Stoke and the North West of England

Despite SY PTE website stating there are no problems on trains in South Yorkshire, and Northern’s website having no reference to Kirk Sandall, the stopping trains are still cancelled between Sheffield Doncaster and Goole. The line at Kirk Sandall is open with Sheffield Hull Yorkshire Coast fast...

Flooding: 26th October - Stafford - Stoke and the North West of England

Flooding of track at Kirk Sandall on Doncaster - Hull / Scunthorpe line, no trains. Northern fasts diverted via Temple Hirst / Selby not serving Goole. FTPE cancelled with some running Cleethorpes to Scunthorpe and back, and some running Manchester to Sheffield or maybe Doncaster (probably...

    Cycle spaces on trains

So presumably the argument about freeing up space for more passengers would apply to people with prams / pushchairs and naturally anyone with more than hand luggage, and I’ve not mentioned wheelchairs! What exactly is the purpose of a train then? Provision should be made on all trains for the...

    Late from the depot

It was 15 late from Leeds but left Neville Hill on time and lost 30 minutes at Marsh Lane. Signalling problems at Wakefield (lightning strike) impacted on journey south of Leeds and greatly increased the delays so departure from Sheffield was about 40 late.

    Fire North of Derby Station

Diversion via Melbourne is very unlikely as it is 9 months since they went that way. A time loss of 20 minutes going south or north from Derby is recoverable if not guaranteed. Many services at this time of day will not have return legs, or only short ones ( Penzance to Plymouth, or Glasgow to...

    Fire North of Derby Station

Certainly seems that way. Many southbound XC services going “off grid” after Clay Cross. Journey time Chesterfield to Derby via Erewash Valley about 30 minutes, thus a delay of about 10 - 15 minutes with reversal at Derby. EMT 13.29 Sheffield to St Pancras seems to have made it as far south as...

    Level Crossings and Cycle Races

A few Years ago the Tour of Britain started at Scunthorpe, then crossed the Trent and passed via Google to Howden. The race continued north past Howden station on the Leeds -Selby - Hull line. A small group of riders made a breakaway right from the start of the race and by the time they reached...

Hull Trains cancellations due to chronic shortage of available rolling stock

There is insufficient platform space at Doncaster to run HT Doncaster to Kings Cross and then use loco hauled Doncaster to Hull. A HT class 180 might fit platform 2 for terminating / starting services from/to London but where a loco hauled Hull to Doncaster might go I don’t know. Doncaster is...

Hull Trains cancellations due to chronic shortage of available rolling stock

Probably the class 180 was parked in platform 2 between Hull - Doncaster trips. I believe one Hull Trains southbound service arrives about 09.25 but doesn’t return to Hull until around 11.25. Platform 6 is in use every hour as is platform 0, so the 180 couldn’t be parked in those for 2 hours...

Hull Trains 180 on fire again.

I accept the argument that drafting HSTs into Hull Trains would be very disruptive and difficult, however to suggest that HSTs would struggle to keep to time is without foundation. After all LNER HSTs (with 9 coaches) manage Kings Cross to Doncaster (pass) in sub 90 minutes every day! HT would...

Hull Trains 180 on fire again.

However there is an hourly Northern service between Hull and Doncaster (Sheffield) today, until dusk anyway! Hull trains have,in the past, advised travel on First TPE to Leeds and then East Coast.
