Having had the pleasure of travelling in one of these units the full length of the Cumbrian Coast (Lancaster to Carlisle) my back complained for days after. Actually I eventually transferred to one of the bench seats in the vestibule area which, at least, allowed better views of the coastal...
In BR days I’ve Ben on a Sunday diversion of XC Leeds to Plymouth HST which travelled south from Sheffield via Leicester, Nuneaton, Coventry, Leamington, Didcot West, Swindon, Bristol Parkway and then normal route. Very interesting!
Doncaster -YORK is 125mph. Frequently XC Voyagers do Doncaster to YORK in 20 minutes - 96 mph average. Mind you, they then sit in YORK for upto ten minutes
Class 155s worked for some time on the Western Region before Class 153s were thought of, and Class 155s still operate from Neville Hill depot by Northern on Calder Valley services as well as the odd Harrogate service.
All services between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate at peak times, in both directions, get very busy with local journeys. I very much doubt that XC Peak services call for the revenue share from WYPTE!
A few years ago XC tried making the tea time southbound stop at Wakefield a pick up only one. It...
MML HST sets operated Leeds to Newquay trains (also to Penzance for a couple of years) on Summer Saturdays for many years under BR. There was an overnight service to Newquay to operate the morning service north as well as the 0605 Leeds to Newquay. These were 8 car sets with full kitchen. XC...
So, ....
If Manchester - Cleethorpes becomes Manchester - Hull via Sheffield, and Sheffield - Doncaster - Hull becomes Sheffield - Cleethorpes the number of crossings of the ECML at Doncaster is unchanged. Hull gets class 185/170 and Cleethorpes gets class 158. The main loser is the Yorkshire...
Sheffield - Bridlington / Scarborough trains are normally 158 operated.
If MML electrification goes ahead, and must surely include Sheffield - Doncaster / South Kirkby junction, then Sheffield - Adwick would be operated by electric units (most likely through to Leeds).
Tram-Train...
That is likely as rail tickets Sheffield to Meadowhall are not valid on the tram now. Any tram journey would involve a change at Fitzallen Square anyway.
However the PTE have other tickets that would be valid on both systems, like Travelmaster (buses, trams and trains).
Do they? - I understood that on weekdays the first 2 departures from Leeds and 2 other departures from Scotland are HSTs, with similar workings back from Plymouth. You are probably correct that the sets are 2+7 rather than 2+8 but I believe 4 of the 5 HSTs are out each day.

Doncaster - Leeds has gained extra trains. One service in each direction to relieve overcrowding - 07.08 Doncaster to Leeds, which is looped at Hemsworth to allow a XC service to pass, and therefore arrives Leeds at 08.03. A 16.57 from Leeds which misses out stops at Outwood and Sandal (these...
