    Hull City of Culture 2017

Not sure about a comparison 'day out' with York, where I now live, but I lived in Hull for 9 years, up to 1988, and I would say it had/has a lot more character, especially along the river Hull and the High Street. I would agree it has in the past had a very blinkered view of its maritime...

HST designer Kenneth Grange to be knighted in New Years Honours list

It's all very well to bang on about liveries, but Pentagram (Grange's design outfit) would have been well resented in the early 70s by all the Derby Engineers, yet here we still are believing the class 43 as the most successful post-war diesel. OK Pentagram only designed the 'streamlining' but...

    Pubs near Morpeth station?

The Joiners arms in Wansbeck St...same side of bridge as station seems to get a good review. Third of mile from station.

    Voting Age

Regardless of all that what you can and cannot do before 18...Thatcher took away 16-18 year olds right to benefit in the late 80s, regardless of homelessness, aggressive relations etc, and now the nasty party are planning to extend that to 25...what?

Essex couple tear down walls in 'beeping sound' search

...and these people are allowed to vote...ffs. (including their sparks)...

    Cricket

Whilst in slightly better news (for me anyway ) Durham off the back of Onions 67/9 and Stoneman making 114 are in a strong position against Notts. But I fear that we may struggle to get a win with only one day left after this and suggestions of rain being around of the next two days...

    Good food near stations

York (again) Brigantes, round the corner from the station, 5 minutes walk, do good food and a fine range of beers. Check times of course, but all day Saturday. Excellent Thai one side, and a lovely Indian on other side. Ignore Saffron...health scare recently!! Mind there's also the West Cornwall...

    any bird keepers here?

Ha...nothing like a cage-bird thread in a railway forum, excellent. My wife presented me with a 6 year old cockatoo (no jokes please) which turned out to be a nightmare. Plainly had been poorly brought up, so to cut a long story short, we sadly donated it to Flamingoland near Malton. Now...

    Rag and bone men

Bet you they are still in Hull...including the nag. very useful, as you say old washing machines, bike frames, cookers, all bits an bobs... Randboooo, much like our Redcar correspondant, Darandio! Interesting.

    Cricket

I fear the weather will win at Headingly...very sad, several mates going but I suspect it'll just be pub for them. Great to see Durham getting their first win...what has gone wrong there?:(

    Day trip from Edinburgh

See the 'under-rated' journeys thread on general discussion...As part of round trip, I'd go to Perth via Ladybank (rather than Stirling)...if it's a clear day, it's an excellent trip. Perth is compact place for a walk about...the river Tay tumbles through the edge of the City...if walking is...

    Now Playing....

DRsatan...brilliant, love it. Having said that, I am equally moved by Butterworth and err... Polica. I love R6 as background...R3 drives me nuts. Why do people request stuff they must have in their collection. Why not something very rare: dumbing down 3! soory just an old'un.

Have men's culinary tastes really changed that much?

A few months back I arranged to meet the carpet fitters for a flat we let. 10am on the dot, after first job, they roll up. Now you know how hard these guys have to work, on contract to Carpet right or whoever...Well the flat's above a bacon butty shop that mainly attracts schoolkids and...

    Shock at Alloa Bus Station

Walking the dog (caliwag as it happens, so now you know) in Acomb, not the finest part of York...has it's problems but I feel safe in daylight: haha. A family passed me (you don't 'walk' Caliwag...it's a sniffathon), the older brother (about 17) tossed his empty fizz bottle on the grass verge...
