Why do Network Rail still use some imperial measurements?

and yet fuel economy is in imperial.

Why do Network Rail still use some imperial measurements?

I have managed it. But you need long journeys to do so.

Why do Network Rail still use some imperial measurements?

Which just shows how stupid using mpg is. Many drivers today probably don't know how many litres to a gallon (as they were taught entirely in metric), so the economy figure is meaningless apart from bigger number = better. We need to move to miles per litre. That's going to be a low figure...

Why do Network Rail still use some imperial measurements?

In that case you must be the oldest person alive as the metre was defined in 1793 1637685206 No thank you.

    3rd Rail 100 mph stretches

Speed limits were not enforced. 100mph was achieved over 90MPH sections.

Isn’t the line down to Bournemouth the South West Main Line.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

How about the big issue? Climate change. Bi modes are not going to tackle that. We need to get away from using internal combustion engines where we can, and railways are a prime candidate for that. In terms of efficiency, electric trains are better. Bimodes are the worst of both worlds...

Trivia: Stations where the most TOCs call

So that's 7 then as Thameslink and Great Northern are both GTR.

ROC - have we created a single point of failure?

I suspect both Network Rail and NATS have some form of business continuity management to allow at least a limited service should their main centre be out of action for an extended period. I also work with critical national infrastructure and our control room is duplicated at another location...

Why we shouldn't electrify more of the UK

There is a huge difference in efficiency. A CCGT (Combined Circuit Gas Turbine) is roughly 62% efficient, transmission losses are not too great because of the National Grid stepping the voltage up. The train (a typical EMU) carries one or two transformers and pantographs (depending on size) as...

    White Rose Leeds

Because it is a stones throw from Cottingley and Morley. It would mean either closing one of those two or lengthening the journey time between Leeds and Dewsbury.

Time to convert 3rd rail to OHLE in light of recent snow/ice problems?

There is no need to rush to replace third rail. As the equipment nears becoming life expired, then it may be something that is looked at on a case by case basis. In the mean time, it the money would be better spent stringing wires up where there is currently no electrification.

    Chains as a measurement.

It wouldn't be impossible. It wouldn't be easy, but 1mm is a small enough measurement that any imperial measurement could be changed to mm. That said, I probably wouldn't bother.

    Chains as a measurement.

It would make a difference as run outs would be harder.

    Chains as a measurement.

GPS has its own issues. No good in tunnels, not great in cuttings or anywhere out of LOS of the satellites. It's ideal for aviation as they tend to fly above anything that can get in the way. Miles and chains is known by drivers and is ideal.

West of England and Bournemouth Mainline Overhead Electrification? (Retitled)

I don't see it happening until the DC is life expired. Then yes although they'd probably start from Woking, down to Weymouth and Exeter (although the line down to Exeter won't be a priority) or maybe do the Pompey Direct first. I have a very strong suspicion that the last place get the...

Comparison of safety between overhead line vs third rail electrification systems

Twaddle. With both systems, if you come into contact with them (ie complete a circuit), more often than not there is one outcome.

Aviation fuel to run by rail from Isle of Grain?

I wonder if the National Grid LNG plant may also get involved. There are numerous road tanker deliveries up to Scotland.

All The Stations - project to video every British Railway Station

To be honest I think this is a relatively quick time.

When will we see the end of level crossings?

The legal definition of highway includes all public rights of way. Anyway in the case of the level crossing your claim would be against NR.
