How do you solve a problem like GEML?

Well the 91s and MK4's will definitely not be going to the MML now.

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

Why is Scotland so good at electrification when England is so poor?

    Ordsall Chord

Could they not be connected via the east instead by Eastlands. Trains could run into the low platforms at Piccadilly from Victoria and the West.

    Sheffield-Dore: Additional Track Possible?

There were speculative plans for tram train using the empty roads in the Sheaf Valley. Would serve the densely populated & traffic clogged suburbs alongside the railway.

    Levenmouth Railway campaign

If the North East of England was ran by the Scottish government imagine how many reopenings we'd have to places like Blyth, Ashington, Consett etc.

    Halton Curve upgrade is on

Would Liverpool - London via a reversal at Chester be one option for increasing Liverpool's services to London & making use of the curve?

    HS2 Northern Branches Discussion

The plan is to build a 3000 space multi-story carpark next to the station (on the current wasteground next to the viaduct) as spell as some vague talk about junction improvements. I agree, it's going to be traffic hell there (it already is!).

    HS2 Northern Branches Discussion

Indeed, saying "but it will benefit Barnsley and Rotherham better than a central station", why not apply that to Leeds and build a station somewhere between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford like the White Rose Centre (ah yes, because that would be equally absurd).

    HS2 Northern Branches Discussion

Nope, the line passes underneath Crewe without stopping, classic compatible services however will stop en-route to Liverpool with a journey time of less than an hour to London (but no link to Manchester).

    HS2 Northern Branches Discussion

The videos on the HS2 website show detailed station locations but not lines (it just paints them as the crow flies). The Leeds Station will be at New Lane, just to the south of the river aire approx 300m from city station. Sheffield will be at Meadowhall. Nottingham at Toton Sidings, Manchester...

    HS2 Northern Branches Discussion

Would've been a real opportunity to grow the airport though. A bit of national infrastructure forethought for once.

    Sheffield station platform question

It's not a huge station so it's feasible if there's no delays. Just up the footbridge & across one platform set.

    South Wales electrification

One argument might be the huge reduction in subsidies and more frequent services that light rail conversion would bring, though I know it's not a popular one on this forum.

    Possible route reopenings

Just imagine if the Great Central Main Line and Matlock - Buxton/Woodhead line hadn't been shut. We probably wouldn't even need to be looking at HS2 now as it could've functioned as a dedicated intercity mainline linking London - Leicester - Nottingham - Sheffield/Manchester and Leeds.

Is Manchester Victoria slowly being rennovated?

Exactly, this talk is ridiculous. The Arena is one of the two busiest arenas in the World and a significant contributor to the Manchester economy and number of people using the railways into the city. Yes it's a shame for Victoria that it was plonked there but what is done is done so time to...

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Does the loop run some distance to the south as it'll take some minutes for these units to get up to top speed, so difficult to see how they could get 18tph onto the system without getting the stopping services upto speed on a loop before sending them in front of non-stopping services.

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Won't trains not stopping at Birmingham Interchange southbound run into the back of any services that do stop?
  18. D

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

That would be my idea scenario too, high speed lines that bypass cities but new lines passing through (perhaps on old alignments or alongside existing alignments) the city centres so that stopping services serve the city but you can run quicker direct services too. The fact they've been able...

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Indeed, let's hope we don't see the MML starved of funding and the improvements it needs in the meantime. Electrification and capacity improvements are a must!

    High Speed Two (HS2) discussion

Indeed, the only direct tram line into Meadowhall originates near Hillsborough in the North West of the city centre and runs through the centre before going up the industrial Don Valley (which is mostly factories and sports facilities rather than housing) to Meadowhall itself. The other main...
