Worst Ferry Crossing you’ve been on?

a Newhaven-Dieppe ferry, sometime in the 90s (I was a kid). Only about a 4 hour crossing. It was rough from the outset. My dad succumb early on and spent most of the crossing outside. I was fine. My sister was fine. My mum was fine. We wandered the ship, littered with people groaning on the...

DFDS launch "brexit bypass" Rosslare-Dunkerque freight ferry route

the Breton and Norman ports are fine for the trucks from Spain/Portugal (as obviously are the northern spanish ports); given how long the crossings are anyway i can the appeal of a full 24hr stint for trucks heading to/from northern, central & eastern Europe

DFDS launch "brexit bypass" Rosslare-Dunkerque freight ferry route

This is a fairly big move This will be the first ferry from Dunkerque to anywhere other than Dover in a long while yes? the picture is fairly generic, the article doesn't say which ships (it'll need a pair) are going to be assigned to it

    Cairngorms mountain railway

Glencoe is also a Downhill Mountain Bike centre, the access chair has hooks for hanging bikes on. As far as trees in a ski area go? Especially in North America it's pretty common to have the lifts and runs cutting through dense forest. It's really rather pleasant

    The decline of P&O Ferries

Much will depend on what state of repair facilities are kept in. Zeebrugge is at least still a fairly important freight ferry port, with multiple single deck linkspans, so setting up a basic service should be easy- whether the current high level side loading ramp for cars will remain is...

    The decline of P&O Ferries

Is this the end of all north sea passenger services to Belgium? As for Dover-Calais new vessels, whilst double bow ferries may be nothing new I don't know of any on the scale of these (at 230m, they'll be longer than the Spirit class ships and assuming that they have a consummate increase in...

Ferries / Cruise Ships in Edinburgh

it would be a very long tow in reverse- but then as previously pointed out the longer ships wouldn't fit through Erskine anyway. The solution of having a cruise terminal at Greenock is sensible

Ferries / Cruise Ships in Edinburgh

larger ships aren't just restricted by the air draft at the Erskine Bridge; even at the entrance to Braehead dock (where the river widens slightly) anything longer than the Azamara ships would have issues in turning around safely (big Cruise liners are longer than the Clyde is wide)

Ferries / Cruise Ships in Edinburgh

Appears that the Pride of Canterbury is today heading back to the Dover Straits- amazing that the ferries ended up there and not a closer port

    Cycle Speedometer or Phone App?

I've got an Edge 520- Garmin quote the battery life in use as 15 hours, and whilst I've never actually measured it I think they're not lying. Dedicated GPS units can be both more accurate in their positioning and much more battery efficient than a phone GPS app simply because they are dedicated...

Could hydrogen-powered passenger ferries operate between Cardiff and Bristol?

so I found the facebook page of the company and one of the most recent posts by them (from late June) is one of those mad copy-paste chain messages saying they don't consent to Facebook using their images. All the other posts, apart from one about this supposed ferry, are about a supposed...

EasyJet to close bases at Stansted, Southend and Newcastle along with over 700 pilots made redundant

Presumably Easyjet withdrawing from Stansted/Southend/Newcastle will mean a serious reduction in routes from there- ie (almost) only to hubs?

    Commuter Ferries

That would need to be a hovercraft

    Reclining Seats on Planes.

Apart from reducing arguments, one of the reasons for low cost/charter airlines going no-recline (and remember these are airlines running eg northern europe to the Canaries!) is that the fixed seats are rather lighter.

    Commuter Ferries

Ferries are fine if there's no viable fixed link option. The Thames Clippers are a bit odd, really- they're a premium product (compared to the equivalent rail options, they cost more), have a max speed of a little over 30mph, on an indirect route, and require something like 6 staff on each boat...

    Taxis

there's one of the Cambridge firms has a few, liveried, Private Hire vehicles with Wolverhampton licences. Utter madness. Blatantly a move to reduce oversight.

    Taxis

legally there's two distinct things that are lumped together as "taxis" in common usage- Hackney Carriages and Private Hire. The latter are often referred to as Minicabs. Hackney Carriages are those that you can hail at the kerbside and that can use taxi ranks. Private Hire are those that must...

New ferries on the Irish Sea routes

it really isn't very pretty- I'm guessing though it is optimised for a combination of capacity, speed, efficiency and sea handling. The new Brittany Ferries Honfluer is from the same yard and is a slightly smaller version of the same hull.. There's also four smaller truck-only versions on the...

Flight to Germany on Large Jet

Quite a few of the charter airlines have single class, short-haul configured, A330s and B767s

    CalMac Lochboisdale ferry

is there another route that also goes on to reduced service, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, that can use the same vessel? Do they take one out for servicing?
