Seven pounds for ten minutes next to Flying Scotsman?

smart business really, fleece punters to raise money for the museum. Wonder if they'll park a train on platform 7, or just have security chasing "freeloaders" away all day?

Are there too many ‘preserved’ diesels and how could they be thinned out?

there's an additional factor here of course- the preserved locos, especially the diesels, are those that those boomers remember from the childhoods and early working lives. That's a strong nostalgia draw, and something that's less powerful with younger people with less memories of them.

Are there too many ‘preserved’ diesels and how could they be thinned out?

Preservation isn't a coherent movement, it's a mass of individuals and organisations, some of whom might not even like one another. There's no overarching guiding hand that could even organise a thinning of the herd, even if that were actually desirable

BBC reporting that heritage railways will run out of coal in 2021

"clean coal" is fitting advanced scrubbers (and even carbon capture and storage) to the chimney of power plants. Not technology applicable to locos

Is there any news regarding a Class 483 train being preserved?

Edit: trying to post a link and quote an article doesn't work well on mobile! But there's confirmation of Epping-Ongar https://www.islandecho.co.uk/island-line-train-to-be-preserved-by-transport-group-in-essex/

Number of coaches on UK mainline rail tours.

13 carriages of Mark 1 or Mark 2, at ~19.7m each*, is 256m. That's without another 20-25m of steam loco, and ~20m of diesel loco. There's not many platforms available that can accommodate that, especially at terminals where an over-length train means other platforms are blocked.

What is the least used station on our Heritage Railways?

Oh indeed, when I was but a nipper it was a very short line! There's the remains now of the runaround loop; it was clearly plain-lined a good few years ago. But the Diesel gala over christmas was the first time I'd been there in years

    Charter train hire companies

The Pretendolino set can easily be used elsewhere- it's just a set of Mark 3s. Can be hauled by anything that can supply ETS, though I think the DVT can only be used with 90s and 87s (86s maybe?), and would need a driver that signs the route, the loco and the DVT (so most of the time on charter...
