there's an additional factor here of course- the preserved locos, especially the diesels, are those that those boomers remember from the childhoods and early working lives. That's a strong nostalgia draw, and something that's less powerful with younger people with less memories of them.

13 carriages of Mark 1 or Mark 2, at ~19.7m each*, is 256m. That's without another 20-25m of steam loco, and ~20m of diesel loco. There's not many platforms available that can accommodate that, especially at terminals where an over-length train means other platforms are blocked.

The Pretendolino set can easily be used elsewhere- it's just a set of Mark 3s. Can be hauled by anything that can supply ETS, though I think the DVT can only be used with 90s and 87s (86s maybe?), and would need a driver that signs the route, the loco and the DVT (so most of the time on charter...
