All change at the top of Southern

319s- Marvellous units! Although could do with a bit of a refurb. Electrostars- Good, but a bit characterless.

Virgin Trains complaint against Chiltern adverts not upheld

Competition does benefit passengers. London to Brum, you now have the choice of 3 very different types of services. If there was no competition, then what? Bendy Pendies only? That choice is a benefit. Certainly if like me you cant stand the bendy trains. Massive benefit. Also, competition...

Virgin Trains complaint against Chiltern adverts not upheld

Ignoring your own figures of 200 passengers per train. Theres a reason Chiltern services have less carriages. Its because they carry less passengers. Therefore, assuming the number of passengers per carriage (on average) is the same, then there is a greater chance of a table with Chiltern. Im...

"Eurostar bids for East Coast Main Line franchise"

I have yet to find any Anti IEP on here who has combined these 2 complaints. However yes on other forums some people have complained about both underfloor engines, and the possibilitiy of services being cut back. But there are very good reasons for this, and im not sure if the fears have been...

"Eurostar bids for East Coast Main Line franchise"

Eh? Who was it started the conversation about how good IEP was going to/ or not going to be? It certainly wasnt Arctic Troll. He purely pointed out that whoever the operator was, would be using IEP, and, as is very very common on here, used a nickname to describe them (a bit like people using...

    Life after a Railcard ?

Even a 'not that bad' journey is a bad journey in comparison. No thanks. Not with those seats, the overall interior of the bendy pendy, and the engine and associated noise of the voyager. I'll leave that to those that can stand it. Leaves more room for them.

    Life after a Railcard ?

I'll agree with you there. OK standard isnt bad on EC, but once youve been first class, its very very difficult to go back. Standard is nice, but first is so much more spacious and comfortable, and the base of the seats dont feel as if they are tilting forward either! If you look from the...

    FGW Franchise Extension

Nowt wrong with ECs attitude to revenue protection. Ive always had ticket checks on every train of theirs that ive been on. Ticket barriers unfortunately going up in more and more places. OK they are frequently left open, but thats no bad thing, and you still have the ticket checks onboard...

Extra Virgin West Coast services rejected by NR

Yes im saying that. They will not be taking voyagers to replace HSTs. Its more expensive, and a lot worse for passengers. Will not happen. The closest would be 222s or 180s. But not voyagers We shall see. Well known why that is. Its because of the way they are leased. Normal leasing, and...

Extra Virgin West Coast services rejected by NR

But werent Virgin mentioning problems which were very unfair to blame on NR? Also, Virgin are just wasting everybodies time. Why cant they work together with NR, instead of against them. Try and at least look like a unified railway. Unless NR have shut up shop and arent talking to anybody, then...

    Great Western to DOR?

Unfortunately no he isnt. In fact, he is so far from the truth, its beyond funny. Unfortunately you have fallen into his little trap. Its people like you he is praying on. Now im no fan of privatisation. Its increased costs too much, and has made the industry too fragmented. However, right...

Extra Virgin West Coast services rejected by NR

They may well have made a different decision, but thats not the point. Virgin want to sue NR for perceived poor performance. Some of the reasons given by Virgin seemingly quite unfair. So obviously this must be Virgin saying that they want NR to do more, not less. Virgin should have been the...

Extra Virgin West Coast services rejected by NR

I dont know that they do. No doubt if they hadnt threatened legal action, then NR would have had no problem. This makes perfect sense to me. I myself would be miffed if NR did allow the extra service.

Scotland: Forward thinking with their railways?

and now time for you to open your eyes and leave the house. Admittedly at first, usage between Airdrie and Bathgate was low. The traffic was all between Glasgow and Airdrie, and Bathgate- Edinburgh. However the trains are gradually starting to become well used all along the route. It is now very...

    scottish rail journey

Not easy to fit all the best lines in, in such a short period. Also depends what your main priority is. Do you want time to actually look around the towns you visit, or are the train journeys the main priority? One possibility just off the top of my head: Day 1- Donny to Aberdeen then across...

    XC Reservations

But its this electronic system that is allowing the people in charge to make daft changes. Like the one mentioned in this thread. If it was a normal paper system, they wouldnt be able to do this. Oh, and whats better. Arguments between passengers once in a blue moon, or on every single train...

    Northbound Lowland Sleeper delayed

Having woken up at stupid o'clock, I looked out of my hotel window here at Crewe, and noticed the sleeper sitting in the station. Its still here now, at 0400hrs. Over an hour late by the looks of it. Now some enthusiasts have turned up to take pictures! I assume they are early risers waiting...

General travel questions for GB railways

The point ThaiTransit made, is a good one though. Are our railways as good from an FOCs perspective? Whilst our railway system is without doubt very good, we are lucky (as passengers), that passenger trains get priority (usually!). It certainly speeds things up an awful lot. I have...

Wick/ Thurso to Penzance, by Sprinter

But for the train i mentioned, it says its timed at 100mph, and it doesnt say its LHCS. It says 158. So there is only one possibility. The 175 is all that would keep to time. So its a very very good chance its a 175.

Wick/ Thurso to Penzance, by Sprinter

Well yes it only gives you what class/ speed the timings are based on. But when it tells you its based on 100mph, thats a sure fire bet its a 175, just as i said.
