UPDATE: I had sent another email in January to VT Customer services disputing their original reply. Other than a new reference number I heard nothing. Last week I received a letter in the post with a cheque for the full cost of this ticket - 5 months after submitting the original claim.

I had a similar one at new year. My ticket was a 1st advance single from Euston to WIndermere. The train arrived at Oxenholme 14 minutes late so missed the onward connection for Windermere by 90 seconds. I had to wait 62 minutes for the next one. Final arrival in Windermere was 63 minutes late...

Out of interest, when an RPI checks someone's Oystercard, is this event logged on the card (or on the RPI's reader) so it can be seen what time a card was inspected (& by whom) ?

I suppose it would prove that the passenger was on the platform at that specific station at the date/time printed on the PTT. However it wouldn't prove that anyone wasn't travelling further (by getting off, obtaining the PTT & boarding the next train. also the passenger might have more problems...

Just use Route "via Audley End" (or similar) for GA services. FCC could use route via Royston (or Hitchin) though the fast trains are non-stop so passengers might not know the route taken.

At Finsbury Park (& stations out to Hadley Wood etc) the off-peak fare to London terminals is for Oyster PAYG & is valid on services after 09:30 so it would be valid on this train from Finsbury Park to Kings Cross (as are off-peak travelcards). There is no off-peak paper ticket from Finsbury...

An Off-peak return (SVR) Potters Bar to Swindon is valid on the 08:15 departure from Paddington so to do that journey you would need to be on the 06:47 from Potters Bar ! The announcement would be clearer & cover most passengers if it said that off-peak travelcards or off-peak tickets issued...

As it is a Network card, up to 4 adults (plus 4 children) can get the discount on the same card (when travelling with the named cardholder), so presumably they only had one card to show.
