Yes- if applying for a claim keep as much evidence as possible with scans of your ticket you are submitting, photos and anything else. I have not applied for one myself. The only time I was on a train which was heavily delayed I was travelling on a free railway staff ticket...!

Some while ago a friend did a similar journey from Slade Green to Charing Cross and agreed with the ticket inspector that there is no first class fare available so standard class tickets are valid. In your case I would be surprised if any further action was taken.

You are taking an example of one fare for one train to one station. Multiply that for every train and every station on not only the East Coast and all other stations served from Kings Cross . The ticket inspector/examiner has to know it all..!
