Worst Railway Journeys in the UK

Having travelled over 99% of the NR system I will add my support for the worst rail journey also being along the North Kent line from London Bridge- Gravesend via Greenwich and Woolwich. Continuous view of depressing housing estates or tower blocks interupted between Greenwich and Woolwich with...

Historic number of passenger trains in the timetable

I did read somewhere that pre- Covid there were more trains per day than in the 1960s. Many (not all..!) branch lines that closed had a sparse service of 3 or 4 trains per day. The frequency of many main line services have improved following electrification or dieselisation.

Least Used Station with the Best Service?

I will nominate Beltring whose service frequency was increased on December 11th from hourly to half hourly all day service. It has around 10,000 passengers per annum. I will leave the readers to calculate the statistics. Whenever I have used trains that I have stopped at the station there are...

Rail projects in the Levelling Up Fund

The difference is between making proposals in the past and now actually allocating money to start the projects.

Worst Rail Routes for fare collection in members' experience?

I travel regularly from Tonbridge and on many daytime trains I have travelled on tickets have been checked. Many random stings at Tonbridge for which the Police have got involved with someone who did not/could not pay for his ticket. Recently caught a train from Wye (which was unmanned) and was...

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

Thank you- As former BR staff and I have been a resident of Kent for over 45 years I am fully conversant with the train services and their routes.. The reason I travelled that route is for different scenery and in no particular rush.

Trains told to get rid of torrent of 'Tannoy spam'

There are too many repetitions of announcements of where the train is going and where it is stopping. Recently travelled from Ramsgate to Victoria via Canterbury West and Maidstone East on a train which calls all stations to Otford then semi fast.. At Ramsgate station the station calls were...

Joanne Macguire appointed as ScotRail Chief Operating Officer

Yes- I consider that railway (or transport) industry experience for that position is a essential quality. Knowledge of operating procedures, railway geography, timetable planning and basic understanding of rules/signalling. Whilst there are senior managers who she can consult with but...

Weekday engineering work taking place between Bournemouth and Southampton Central - 1st-5th November 2021

In my opinion it is a good time to plan the work particularly with less passengers travelling than pre- covid. It is cheaper to do the work in a 5 day blockade than over several weekends. I agree with others there have been several midweek blockades on other lines recently.

    Very long on board announcements

In BR days I would loved to have heard the station announcement at Waterloo for the 1100 Atlantic Coast Express with its 7 portions with its final coach (or two) arriving at Padstow. In those days no onboard PA announcements.

Level crossing Phone to cross but can't speak!

I was recently at Wool in Dorset where I used a pedestrian footpath crossing which had red or green lights indicating to the user whether or not is was safe to cross.

Longest Distance to a Rail Replacement Bus Stop

Three Oaks and Doleham are both situated over a mile along a narrow country lane off the A259 Hastings- Ashford road. In the past the substitute buses stopped on the main road in the hamlet of Guestling Thorn to serve both stations where the road forked off in different directions to serve the...

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

The Kirkham & Wesham to Burn Naze track is still in situ with a Heritage railway society trying to reopen it. It is also one of the lines listed to the Department of Transport for proposed reopening.

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

Has anyone mentioned that track is mostly still in situ on the Croxley Green- Walford High Street branch. Although closed in the mid 1990s work started on reconstruction and an aborted new connection to the Metropolitan Line Watford-Moor Park branch. A section of the track and embankment was...

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

The Woodside- Selsdon line closed to passengers in 1983 but the section between Selsdon and the site of Spencer Road Halt was used as a run round loop/shunting neck for oil trains until the 1990s. The track is still in situ albeit well overgrown.

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

I claim that the longest time that abandoned track is still in situ after closure is the narrow gauge Rye and Camber Tramway in Sussex. Closed in 1939 but used by the military during the WW2 and it was officially abandoned in the late the 1940s. Track is still laid for about a quarte of mile...

    Hardest station to depart from?

If we are recalling the past then a mention for the now closed Folkestone Harbour station. Trains starting from there had over a mile at 1 in 37 before stopping at Folkestone East (formerly Junction) to reverse. If the sea was rough or low sea mist then it was greasy rails to contend with. In...

    Rail replacement buses

As someone who used to work for BR (Southern Region) planning engineering works and substitute buses I had several years experience. I agree that many stations were inaccessible for substitute buses (there are a few that have no road access!) accordingly the nearest convenient stop was...
