Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

Short answer: not to the same degree, no. It doesn't generally prevent me from travelling (unless I'm particularly sensitive to it) but I do need to wear bright pink glasses with UV filters and take a load of anti-seizure medication. Long answer: it depends. There's contributory factors of...

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

Well, ideally for me, it would be no-frills 1st. 2+1, full spacing. No anti-macassars, no free food or drink, no free wi-fi, no lounges. But I doubt that would fly, so extra legroom is a good start :)

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

I would imagine the benefits case wouldn't be there. HVAC is very efficient, and (IIRC) more more economical than the drag from open hopper windows. Of course, it can warm as well as cool. Quite. For example, I love the 387 seating, which puts me in a very small minority! Some of this...

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

"Quiet" as a good thing is subjective, of course. The white noise from hopper windows can be a wonderful way to drown out unwanted earbud overspill or kids-on-full-volume-iPad-Peppa-Pig annoyances (or indeed to facilitate the projectile ejection of said annoyances).

Is passenger comfort on trains getting increasingly worse?

Seat pitch isn't the same as legroom: it's the cadence of the rows of seats, and so legroom is also affected by the depth of the seat itself. The slimline seats that BA and easyJet use do make the use of pitch as a comparison for legroom somewhat misleading. That said, the 29" pitch on the BA...

    Class 387 to GN

Goes to show you can't please everybody - I used to take the 17:10 to Hitchin and then change, specifically to avoid spending any more time on a 317 than necessary!

In terms of standing capacity, there is an improvement compared to the 317s and 321s. These don't really have anywhere to hold on to in the aisles, so most people crowd into the vestibules. Where people are in the aisles, they tend to stand around the seat backs, but that's a really cramped...

Same here, and I genuinely like them.

How tall are you, though? At 6'1", hardly that far along the bell curve, I increasingly find seats on trains and planes that simply don't work for me - where I cannot sit unless my legs are at an angle, and where I cannot keep within the width of a single seat.

    Class 387 to GN

Same here. Far, far too low, bouncy, and with the back at a weird angle so that you need to use your feet to support you, and it's very uncomfortable to read. The position means that, on the 317s (and 321s, although less so), not only do my shoulders overlap on to the next seat by quite some...

12-car 387 on the 07:32 PBO-KGX this morning. Very pleasant journey.

The 1840 is just over 10 minutes behind by the time it reaches BIW (often less in practice), so little wonder! I hate the 1813, but that's only because I end up getting it only when I've missed the 1743 (the 1813 HIT-BIW), usually by a matter of a few seconds!

The thing about the hard seats baffles me. I find the 387 seats several orders of magnitude more comfortable than a 317. Each to their own, I suppose.

    Class 387 to GN

Was on the same train. Rather liked it, although I'm only on as far as Hitchin, and standing as I have a bike with me. The wider vestibules make a difference (particularly getting on/off at Hitchin), and the grab handles mean there's a better spread of where you can comfortably stand in the...

    Class 387 to GN

Depends. I'd rather have a cancelled train and do some work at home, than one I can't fit on, and spend another half hour plus milling around the station.

Because you get to feel the benefit when the 8-car 387s come on.

    Class 387 to GN

Been 317s for a few years now, then 321s in the last couple of weeks. Hasn't been 365s for a long time! We'll see. I'm an evil cyclist as well, so really hoping it doesn't result in people hating me even more than they do at present...

    Class 387 to GN

Oh, that's my regular. Will be interesting - it generally leaves Arlesey full and standing, has quite a changeover at Hitchin, then is full enough to leave passengers behind at Hitchin. Wonder if the wider corridor will help?
