Either redspottedhanky have some technical issues today or Nx have introduced some extra expensive AP fares?

Yes, the fare exists and has done for a while, however, in reality, this ticket will never be sold as an All Line Rover is cheaper than this!

I'm not sure why it exists though...

When a fare is withdrawn, the fare is set to £999.99. It should also be removed from booking engines.

Just wait for the Daily Mail to get hold of it...

"National Express sets £1000 train fare!"

There was already a story doing the rounds a while ago about a ~£1000 fare. I forget the details.

XC reduced the price of the ticket after the newspaper report. At its most expensive, I believe it was NFM05, it was priced at £1068 for an FOR, and the previous year it was £1002. By NFM06 they had reduced it to £640.

CrossCountry bowed to the pressure after the media storm. Started, I believe, by Barry Doe at RAIL magazine. Until 22nd May 2010 the 1st Class Anytime Return Newquay - Kyle of Lochalsh (Any Permitted) was £1068.

No longer here
No, it's never been £999, but when a particular ticket or fare is withdrawn it is first altered to read "£999.00" to stop it from being sold. (A bit of a fiddle to get around the limitations of the system). It can take some time for Manuals to be updated and all TIS systems to be updated in aid of removing the fare from view completely.

There are numerous examples all around the network of £999.00 fares.
