Spotted my first 11 car set out in service yesterday - 390114. Alas, all the Pendos I travelled on over the weekend were 9 car :(

I saw one the other day at Manchester Picc I think. I was on a train that was departing from Piccadilly when I notices a rather shiny carriage labeled 'Coach U' and that the train was a rather snug fit on the platform.

I saw two today...northbound at say 12:15 and a southbound at 12:50 at Milton Crossing near Blisworth.
I'm sure they sound different to the 9 car units, maybe the engines are straining more?

As one of the new carriages is a powered vehicle it shouldn't make that much of a difference, as far as my non-technical assumptions are concerned: Seven powered carriages to propel a train of eleven compared to six powered carriages to propel a nine carriage train won't have changed the power to weight ratio considerably.

A new addition to the 11 car fleet is 390122 although according to TRUST there is no info at present as to its whereabouts

Are the new coaches being delivered without numbers and then being given numbers according to which set they get added to?
It all seems rather random as to which sets are being lengthened.

They are given temporary numbers for transit and then when insetred in to a 9 car pendolino they are given the numbers that match the set.
Hope that helps, Sam

Thanks for that, I thought that they must be getting their numbers when inserted.

The update as I understand it is now 107/114/122/131/136/137/141/154/155/156/157 and now 119 has been made into a 11 car set and is currently at longsight

Went to a Jubilee party in Weedon a couple of weeks back and was counting the amount of 390 coaches in each set that went past all day :)

Considering a move to Memphis
The 1623MF Euston - Preston has been an 11 coach last 3 times I've travelled on it in the past two weeks, as has the 0840 and 1540 Euston - Manchester.

Do the 11 coach ones have regular diagrams, or am I just getting lucky ?

Assuming you mean the 1633? (1P21)
This is my regular train home from work and we've had 114, 136 and 156 last week.

There is an internal document that stipulates the 11 car diagrams on a week by week basis as more 11 car units become available. In this case, 1P21 is always very lightly loaded leaving Euston butI believe the unit comes in fromm Liverpool and is usually quite busy.

I've noticed that the 11 car sets look cleaner - particularly on the red area of the roof edge above the windows. Has there been a change in paint colour, or more attention through the washer?

You may be looking at the new coaches/brand new sets. They are much shinier given they haven't had a number of years of being pelted by flies and any other rubbish the railway/local "youths" can throw at it!

I've noticed these past couple of weeks most of the Pendo's I've seen going past my house have been 11 cars! It really does seem like an overnight thing, Virgin have really got into gear now. I thought they were going to be 6 standard class coaches and 5 first class coaches (1+ for each class) but I think all but a couple I've seen have had 7 standard coaches and 4 first coaches.

All of the lengthened sets have 2 extra standard class carriages. Why on earth would a 390 need more first class capacity? Apart from a couple of peak departures from Euston there is hardly ever any problem with capacity in first class. Standard class on the other hand...

AFAIK I have been told that 390024 and 390042 have both been made into 11 car sets and renumbered 390124 and 390142

I live near Northwick Park and can't watch one pass without counting carriages now, think I'm developing OCD! This also happened to me when they went up to 9 carriages a few years ago, but at least then I could stop when I knew they were all done, this time I believe they're only lengthening some of the fleet, so I fear I'm stuck counting forever!

Travelled back from Preston on a new 11 car set the other week, nice clean fresh interior, and of course more free seats than usual, so it's worth it anyway.
