A 3-car pacer just passed me obviously forming the 1813 Leeds-Manchester Victoria. The rear and centre car was a 144 but the front vehicle (MCV bound) looked like a 142. Has there been a mixmatch or are my eyes deciving me?

No. There are Calder Vale services booked for 5 car Pacers which consist of both 144(3)+144(2) and 144(3)+142 combinations.

Don't Northern have a couple of half Pacers kicking about at the moment, is it possible they've cobbled something together using spare bits?!

If there was I'm sure it'd have been put on here ages ago.

There is no reason operationally why it cant happen, that said.
