Hi, I have noticed that 142001 and 142015 have a black mesh grid on the front however on all other units there is a yellow panel. I have asked northern but they have no idea. The only thing I can think of is that it is something to do with the Leyland engines.

Ah yes, however I’m wondering why they both have the black mesh grid on them whereas the others have a plastic pannel

Like the 150 that has the painted metal work around the windows and the 142 with a turquoise roof there probably is no reason except for it came in to the paint shop like that so it goes out the same way. Maybe the paint shop guys ran out of the correct colour paint years ago.

There was also so trial improvement on the cab heating and air con I believe at some point.

Most of the units used to have them and it looks like the yellow plastic panel covers something up that used to be there

142085 which is now with TfW had the grill plated over completely at one end at least in RRNE days when still in original provincial livery. Noticed this with the original mesh grill on 001 and 015 but I guess they have just never had them altered rather than for any other reason.

I think 142001 is earmarked for preservation as it has been the least modified from the original spec so that may be part of it?

Do any of the current pacers still have Leyland engines? I thought they were all Cummins-fitted now.

Does anyone remember 156443 with yellow on the sides? Distinct from the rest of the northern spirit fleet of 156s

I read somewhere that 001 (GMPTE) and 015 (Skipper) were the first two 142s built... if true, then that might have something to do with it...?

They are, been Cummins L10 / Voith. The Leyland engine and gearboxes were done away with quite early on.

001 was indeed patient zero and is supposed to get one of it's GMPTE liveries back at some point. If someone want's to ellaborate on 015...

001 is modified as per the majority of ex FNW examples with large luggage rack at one end.

The 5 units which weren’t modified like this and remain as close as damn it to original spec are 142003, 013, 029, 030 and 067. These weren’t touched as they were supposed to go off lease when the Oldham loop closed. However after a short time in warm storage they came back into service.

On consideration, I think it's more that 001 has the original interior layout - does that sound more like it?

I was on 031 the other day and it still has a light blue patch above the cab windows. Seem to remember this was the colour from
the Regional Railways days. Has lovely tatty bus seats too!

As been said before. Five were left unrefurbished as were not required when the Oldham loop went tram. They still have the partitions either end where the smoking area used to be. These were 142 003/13/29/30 and 067. Pacer number 1 was refurbished many moons ago under FNW and given the Purple/Pink scaffolding (luggage rack) treatment.

The turquoise panel around the destination blind is simply due to a dodgy batch of roof paint that a Northern appeared to have at some point.

Many 142s and I think even a couple of 150s and 158s had turquoise roofs at one point.

it looks like the old original provincial livery showing through worn out newer paint

It isn’t though, provincial 142s had black destination blind surrounds anyway.

There was a couple of 158s running round with the turquoise roofs too.

Yes the light blue roof was definitely done by Northern. I believe 158816 had this colour roof amongst a few others. As delivered 142001 - 050 had black painted full glass destination blinds in that area (021 might still have at one end at least) and 142051 - 096 had black fibreglass surrounds to the destination blinds which were modified on the earlier units in the 90’s with the possible exception of the aforementioned 021.

From memory the last 142s with Leyland engines were 142034 and 142067. They were dealt with in April 1996. They got the new doors at the same time. After then, the only Pacers with Leyland TL11 engines (and SCG gearboxes) were the Class 141s, which had all been withdrawn by summer 1998.
