On the bus coming to work this morning and 150 921 (3 car) passed beneath me at Lawrence Hill.
I couldn't see the side numbers, but I think it's pretty safe to assume that this is 150 121 renumbered, to make it easier to distinguish it as being a 3 car set, rather like FGW have done with the 158s.
I expect 127 will get renumbered as well.

Good on FGW, this makes much more sense than what CT did renumbering them as /0s, when they are mechanically different.

Yep, 150121 & 150127 are to be renumberd into the /9 series to distinguish the two from normal 150/1s - Which also makes me wonder if NR have routed it as a two car before?

In a way, im also supprised that they've gone up to the /9 series, as opposed to the /0 series as per CT/LM/NWM days.

No - the decision was made before any such mishaps occurred!

It was nice and tidy from a rostering point of view though, if not a maintenance one: 150/0 automatically equalled a 3-car unit, and 150/1 (and a couple of 150/2s) a 2-car one.

That was true for the West Midlands, but for FGW the 150/0s exclusively operated Reading-Basingstoke and the 150/9s operated the busiest Cardiff-Taunton trains so it's better this way. They used the /9 designation to be in common with the 3 car hybrid 158s I think.

I had thought a while ago that some form of renumbering would be sensible. My choice however would have been to go for /3 numbers, as these would tie in logically with them being a 150 unit with three cars. Ho hum...

Don't expect to see 150921 for a couple of days either, it's currently stuck at Weymouth with the line to Yeovil Pen Mill closed.

Flooding. Im not sure where the flooding is on the Weymouth line - Around the Yeovil area is where ive heard mentioned, however it's still rather wet around these parts, with Flooding closing the line at Axminster too.

Yetminster is the problem. A bridge in the affected area - E 30/151 no less - has been examined by a structural engineer who has highlighted missing masonry. It's unclear whether this was previously missing or has been washed out by the flood water. As such, the bridge is out of use until given a thorough check by various other important bods in hard hats.

Managed to get the line open today, quite surprised really, didn't sound very good at all yesterday.

The 3 car 150 comes through bathampton often it has a flat face unit on each end but a normal halve one in the middle.

No, but they don't seem to do that great a job with half the 158s either! I guess because they keep changing them they don't take that much care.

Yep that's how the new "hybrid" 3-cars work. There were only ever two true 3-car 150s, 150001 and 150002, the prototypes. These new 3-car units are formed by taking three 2-car units (i.e. six carriages) and reforming them. They've done it with the 158s too. A good idea, if a little unseemly.

158s a little different to 150921 and 150927 but the same end product. The 150s were formed up with 2 odd coaches (lost their partners along the way) and thus inserted as middle cars as they were 150/2 vehicles and provided through assess in the 150/9. The 158 s were formed by splitting 2 Car sets and attaching each vehicle to another 158 (2 Car) rather than in the middle. By the way, 158798 is a true 3 Coach Set like 150001 and 150002

Yes it's one of 9 surviving true 3-car sets, the other 8 being in service with Northern Rail.

Although technically Northerns aren't really the true 3 coach sets since the middle coaches actually belong with some EMT sets and not with their current Northern sets

No. There's no vehicle available to add to it.

Correct, although I personally think FGW should break up th 2 150/2s with CT interiors they have to make 4 more 3 car sets.
Maybe it was a typo, and Ivo meant will 150127 be renumbered to 150927, and yes it will. It is currently receiving maintenance, and once it is done it will be renumbered.

But that would give them less units.

I'd rather FGW have as many units available as possible, even if they are only 2-cars.

True, that is why it hasn't been done. If FGW picked up a couple of 153s or something like that from somewhere, then it would be a better idea tbh.

153s can do strengthening rather than form up 3 Coach 150s. Apart from the Cornish Branches, all 153s work is virtually strengthening. A 3 Car 150 would have to stay together all the time but a 153 can be used to strengthen selected trains at critical times.
