I was at Trowbridge Wednesday and noted that the 1240 Bristol - Brighton was ran by 158 750!
What on earth is it doing down here?

it still carrys the half regional railways and Barbie livery and the First Transpennine logos were still on it.
What was more annoying was it had First Class (de-classified of course) and wished I was on that!!

If anyone knows why its down here id like to know

taa,
James.

Ahh - Jim's pet unit of the moment. Just adding a bit of First branding to the area I suspect. Don't forget it's got first class - declassified on all ex Wessex services.

I don't think it is, as most the sparw 158's are going to SWT, I am sure FGW will refurb it soon if it will stay theres, to out the FC

3 carriage units only are going to SWT.

The rest are up for grabs, but so far mooted for Great Western - however it is to be borne in mind that Great Western has already lost some 158s to Arriva.

As Alex said, its 3-car units only to SWT - and only 9 of them (to replace the 9 Class 170s).

Is 158750 staying down this way for the duration in its current guise internally and externally? If so, I need it for haulage, mileage and declass.FC on some WSX routes! HELLFIRE!

Apparently they're being refurbed and reclassified 159.

There is no technical difference to the 159s, bar the obvious that being seperate for so long has brought about. There's no reason why a 158 couldn't be re classified a 159.

The only difference originally was the interior and a few details like emergency windows.

AFAIK, no. I understand that all Pacers, Sprinters and 170 Turbostars (but not 171's which do have different couplers) can work in multiple with each other. I think the main reason for the 159 classification was due to internal differences.

Some of the wiring is different between 158s and 159s. 159's have CSR where 158's have NRN. I think the 159 has a different engine manufacturer and abit more HP. 158's are possibly 90mph while 159's are 100mph
[EDIT]
Oh, and as a future tractor fitter, all the above information was on the tip of Sprog's tonuge, well, his spike to be precise ;)

I thought 159s were only 90mph? Also as a useless fact, some 158s in the 158701-158872 range have RETB too (for Scotland).

159s are:
159001-159022 "Cummins NTA855R3" of 400hp per vehicle (3 car - total 1200hp).

158s are:
158701-158814 "Cummins NT855R" of 350hp per vehicle (2 Car - total 700hp).
158815-158862 "Perkins 2006-TWH" of 350hp per vehicle (2 Car - total 700hp).
158863-158872 "Cummins NT855R" of 400hp per vehicle (2/3 car - total 800hp/1200hp).
158901-158910 "Cummins NT855R" of 350hp per vehicle (2 car - total 700hp).

158s have 3 different types of engine. Those up to 158814 have Cummins NTA855Rs rated at 350hp, basically an uprated verison of the engine in the Sprinters. 815-862 have Perkins 2006-TWH engines also rated at 350hp, which are also fitted to the 165s and 166s. 158863-158872 have Cummins NTA855Rs but uprated to 400hp by increasing the revs. Both types of Cummins engines are also in the 3car 158s. The 159s also have the uprated Cummins engines, but still have a 90mph top speed. As far as converting 158s to 159s, since it was done once it could be done again. I'd have thought they'd choose some 400hp engined ones though, although these all work for Wessex at the moment.

They have higher HP rating but apparently, according to one fitter at Tyseley on WNXX, they are limited to the same rev as the standard 350hp engine so there's not actually any benefit, other than a slight increase in noise.

they will most likely be reclassified into 159/1 to allow it to match up with the other 159's.

They might do, the reason why SWT are getting the 158s is so they can have a standard DMU fleet. I think it will be silly to re-number them! Especialy 158809 :p
