Noticed this morning that GWRs 158950 is working with TfW today, with 150257 and 150240 (TfW units paired with it) . Is this due to the strikes allowing the unit to boost capacity on TfW?

Currently working 1F51 from Swansea to Cardiff Central.

With no GWR services over the Swansea to Cardiff line it seems a sensible way to maintain capacity.

Bravo! I wish there were more of this cross-working, the entire industry such be making use of common assets.. 377s and 172s for example...

Great to see this GWR on loan to TFW. This meant a 7 car formation for the two hourly Cardiff-Swansea shuttle.

Here is a public YT video of the splendid combination:

This is not the first time TfW and GWR have cooperated - a few years years ago, I think the Severn Tunnel was closed for engineering works and then an incident somewhere between Caldicot and Lydney shut that line too, a GWR unit (158953?) got trapped in Wales. I think it did a round trip to Manchester Piccadilly the following day. It’s good to see TOCs using common sense and working together!

Surprised the unions were ok with this (or is it that, since it was in the middle and no-one had to drive it, there would have been no legal grounds for an objection?)

The union can’t object to a TOC hiring in capacity temporarily from another TOC. And if they could, it would be insane - they’d literally just be objecting to extra capacity.

Wasn't there an objection from the driver's union about the East Midlands(?) 153s that come over? Something due to the cab controls being different and drivers were only allocated shifts of two hours.

That was type of seat and position of it.
There isn't much difference in the 158s except for no ERTMs equipment.

On what basis could a union object?

The unions can object if the hired stock has a markedly inferior working environment, as is the case with 153s where the retrofitted cab is smaller than the original. It will depend on the nature of the differences and the working relationship between the unions and management.

The extra stock has come from a strike-bound company in order to lessen the effects of a strike.

But TfW Cardiff drivers already sign GWR cl158s as they have booked work on them so could hardly object.

Indeed and they drive GWR 158s anyhow on a planned basis strikes aside.

Putting customers first - seems entirely reasonable to me. It wasn't like TfW were running services on behalf of GWR - simply ensuring its own services had appropriate capacity.

What booked workings do TFW Cardiff depot have on the GWR 158s? Is this when they stable overnight at Canton to form the first Portsmouth service or are TFW drivers/guards booked for some Cardiff-Bristol runs?

Correct, TfW drivers take them into Canton on weekends

I see there are a pair of GWR 158s on loan today to TFW to run a Cardiff-Swansea and return shuttle - 158957 and 158958.

There’s also a triple TfW 158.

Edit: No, it’s just RTT being silly and showing a six carriage unit in TfW livery  It is, in fact, the train you’ve just mentioned. Very good working between GWR and TfW again.

How come the first carriage of the 158 looks like a single unit on its own because of the second carriage having a front yellow end? at 0:22
