Until a few weeks ago, 170s were a common sight west of Selby towards LEEDS but the services appear to have reverted to 15n series. Have the 170s been withdrawn or just reallocated?

I don't know exactly how reliable it is - but RealTimeTrains nowadays shows (in theory) which unit (usually with exact numbers) is in use on Northern services.

eg:

Still very much in service on the Scarborough-Sheffields and Harrogate Loop. One can drop on the Hull-Halifax or Hull-York services from time to time however as a way of getting units from Neville Hill to Hull and vice versa and between Hull and Harrogate duties (so I believe).

The interchange between the routes is a key part of Northern's 170 diagramming. 170s' gearbox cooling requires a certain amount of "wind assistance", not so much as to make one-off slower runs any sort of problem but over a longer period of time it can do. This lesson was learned through experience on the Harrogate line with 60mph being the typical line speed and negative aerodynamic effects within Bramhope Tunnel leading to gearbox issues being uncomfortably common in the early days of Northern's use of the class. Interchanging with the faster runs between Sheffield and Hull seems to have largely dealt with the issue.

They were originally meant to work Leeds- Wigan/ Southport- why was this dropped?
They couldn't get route cleared through one of the tunnels (possibly Winterbutlee) between Walsden and Littleborough and also TPEs new trains were in the same boat whilst on diversion. The tunnel has since been fixed but northerns plans had changed by then

Plenty on that line, the majority of work is booked 170s.
All full day York diagrams, just the peak 150 that runs twice a day. Normally 170s with the odd 150/158 on the Harrogates and Knaresboroughs.

They run every Scarborough to Sheffield service, and some York to Hull/Leeds (via CHF) services, though York to Hull is mostly 155s and York to Leeds/Blackpool is mainly 158s and 195s.

Looking at RTT the Class 170’s are being used on the Covid timetable on Leeds-Hull services, think it’s 2 units and 1 diagram is booked 158.

SCA-SHF services aren't running at the moment, the service is split at Hull. Passengers have to change there with a connection time of just 2-3 minutes, the paths remain the same. I hope that they are holding the connections.

The 0655 Sheffield to Hull has changed to a 158 since Monday.
