I am doing some research on the above train which ran Summer Saturday's only; as shown in my CH WTT 1976/77. I would like to know if this train run throughout the whole of the 1960's and 1970's. I hope a forum member can oblige with some information. Thank you.6

All I can quickly find is 1967 where there was a summer 1351 Llandudno-Nottingham. The outward working was into Llandudno at 11.30. By contrast, 1958 had 2 midday Llandudno-Derby trains (as well as several other extras via the North Staffs line).

Summer holiday services were drastically reduced over the 5-10 years that followed but then t changed relatively little from then to the late 70's.

As an informed guess, the Nottingham working might have run each summer from the mid 60's but with slight variations in actual times, rather than just for odd seasons.

There was a 1D17 13:00 Llandudno - Nottingham (arr 17:28) in the May 1980 timetable and a 1D17 12:33 Llandudno - Nottingham (arr 16:36) in the May 1982 timetable. Obviously slightly outside the 1970's.

Working backwards through the public LMR timetables I have:
1973: 14.00 Llan-Nott via Uttoxeter
1972: 13.55 Llan-Nott via Uttoxeter
1970: 13.53 Llan-Nott via Uttoxeter
1969: 13.52 Llan-Nott via Uttoxeter
1964: 10.10 Llan-Nott + 13.40 Llan-Derby both via Uttoxeter
1963: none to Nottingham, but the following provided connections -
08.45 Llan-Leics Ldn Rd via WCML, Nuneaton & Hinckley
10.15 / 13.20 / 13.50 Llan-Derby all 3 via Uttoxeter
1961: 08.45 Llan-Leics Ldn Rd via WCML, Nuneaton & Hinckley
10.15 Llan-Derby Mid via Uttoxeter
12.55 Llan-Leics Central via Derby Friargate & Nott Vic

1975. 07:33 Nottm - Llan (arr. 11:39)
13:00 Llan - Nottm (arr. 17:21)

1976: 07:35 Nottm - Llan (11:32)
13:05 Llan - Nottm (17:21)

1978: 07:30 Nottm - Llan (11:35)
13:02 Llan - Nottm (17:25)

In the early 1970s, it was booked for a pair of Toton Class 25s - in later years, reduced to a single Class 25.

In later years, it had been degraded to a pair of Tyseley suburban dmus (Class 116). Not looked at all timetables yet, but it was still in the 1986 timetable. By summer 1990, there was still a Nottingham - Llandudno service, but the return went only to Derby. (11:50 Llan - Derby arr 14:57)

Thank you very much to the five members who responded in detail to my post. I now have much more information about the summer Saturday service. Thank you once again. Foxcote

It looks like one of those summer Saturday trains that was started on the old Great Central line - possibly before WWII. Some of these disappeared or were re-routed after the 1962 summer season, eg. East Midlands - Scarborough & Cleethorpes, via Mansfield Central & Tuxford, and probably including this Llandudno service. The rest, eg. Sheffield Vic - Blackpool via Woodhead and Bradford Exchange - Poole via Woodford Halse, were re-routed after the end of the 1964 season.

Such as the one SouthDevonian refers to via Derby Friargate - when did that close?

Derby Friargate to Nottingham Victoria closed to passengers in September 1964, but remained accessible for freight until 1967.

The PSUL (Passenger Services over Unusual Lines) website shows the summer Saturday Kings Norton to Skegness and return as the last service to use the Derby Friargate - Egginton Jn and Dove Jn - Burton North Stafford Jn lines. It gives the last ran date for this pair as 29/8/64.
