Slightly unusual one here, or at least it seems odd to me. This service is being operated by a single class 158 unit. Can't say I've seen a Glasgow-Aberdeen service that's not a 170 in a while.

Not even one of the refurbished units either - didn't think to check the number (was more concerned with not getting left behind).

Is this a common thing?

They do crop up from time to time on Glasgow-Aberdeens, usually a last minute replacement for a conked out 170 I imagine.

One Aberdeen-Glasgow service I use regularly from Perth throws up a 158 about one time in 30, not that I've been counting!

It happens enough for it not to be rare. Apart from the odd 4 car (and most commonly a 2 car coupled to a 170) on a Sunday, it happens occasionally on early morning/late evening services when capacity is needed elsewhere. Since the service is timed for 100mph, the 170 diagrammed for it must of clanked out somewhere.

It is also not uncommon for Scotrail to continue a cancelled Aberdeen to Glasgow service from Perth if it has been cancelled further north. Perth, being unusually large becuase of the track layout and lack of refurbishment, is probably one of the busiest stations for DMU stabling North of Edinburgh or Glasgow, so there is always a spare 158 kicking around - Perth guards also have "spare" shifts in case of these situations (and more if they arise).

Thanks all. Guess I've just been (un)lucky up until now.

Going to guess it was a last minute swap as it's one of the units that doesn't have WiFi.

Looking on RTT, the inbound train into Glasgow Central was cancelled before it started at Aberdeen. As said, it's not uncommom for Scotrail to use Perth to continue any cancelled southbound services. Seems a bit odd that Scotrail wouldn't run an empty unit up to Dundee or Carnoustie at least if they knew it was cancelled at least 1 hour and 20 minutes before the train was scheduled to reach Perth.

Yesterday i was in Central and seen 170 and 158 arrive in the morning from Aberdeen , was the first service down from Aberdeen . Seen the 170 and 158 combo more often on the Inverness route . Seen a few 2x 158s at Central too though they appear on the shotts line . Would be rare to see a 158 via Falkirk High , used to get them after peak time over 10 years ago.
