I sat one in January and was successful, Start my course on April 4th.
You will probably be asked the following, Don't quote me on some of these as its has been a few Months but it should give you an idea of what to expect...
: Tell us a bit about yourself?
: What do you know about Northern Rail? Bear in mind depending on when you have your interview if it is before April 1st it still be with Northern Rail and not Arriva but brushing up on your knowledge about the Franchise change on April 1st and Arriva wont hurt.
: What do you know about the role of Train Driver?
: Why you are applying for the role? DO NOT MENTION MONEY!
You will also be asked Scenario based questions such as...
: Tell us about a time when you have worked well under pressure?
: When you have had to explain something to someone with less mechanical knowledge than yourself, I.E put it in simple terms. How you did this?
: When you have had to work alone for long periods? How you dealt with fatigue?
: When you have to work to strict rules and regulations?
Possibly a few more which I have missed but basically have about 10 good Scenarios in your mind that can cover most questions! Use words like Safety, Working under pressure, Decision making, Following rules and regulations, Clear communication etc
Plenty of other info on this forum too!
Answer the scenario based questions using the STAR principle,
Situation - What was the problem, job you had to do, Situation you where in?
Task - What did you have to do to to resolve the problem?
Action - What you did?
Result - What was the outcome?
You might also be asked about your commitments to the course.
Usually takes about 1 Hour, Relax and be yourself. It is a friendly environment!
