I was surprised on Tuesday evening at 8pm that BBC4 transmitted a 2 hour long canal ride on their channel. Just purely a canal ride with no commentary!

A two-hour, real-time canal boat journey down one of Britain's most historic waterways, the Kennet and Avon Canal, from Top Lock in Bath to the Dundas Aqueduct!

The programme is available to watch on BBC iPlayer for the next 27 days. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b05t7kc1/all-aboard-the-canal-trip

A little slow and different to the train Driver's Eye View/Cab Rides I periodically watch. But I'll have to watch this I think when I've got time. Very relaxing easy viewing! I will take some sandwiches, snacks, and some cans onboard to enjoy during the journey!

If you listen carefully at one point, there is the sound of a steam loco whistle as the canal passes adjacent to the GW line. Obviously coincided with a steam charter working...

It was a delightful programme on a canal I've not travelled on, so quite interesting and also rather soothing. I needed the soothing due to a very unpleasant phone call I'd received earlier in the day, so it was twice welcome!

I understand that this was part of BBC4's Go Slow season, but I don't know what the next one will be.

This 'slow television' is somewhat popular in Norway. There was a 7 hour train ride broadcast and more famously a 134 hour cruise from Bergen up the Norwegian North and West Coasts.

I heard about this on the radio the other day, although the broadcaster didn't mention the channel it was on.
Now that I know I may have to give it a look. Could be a good way of winding down after a stressful day.

I'm not 100% certain! but I think the series has now finished.

As well as the canal trip, earlier this week there was a 2 hour programme of the morning chorus (I gave that a miss) and three half hour programmes featuring glass blowing, black smithing and making a Windsor chair.

They are doubtless available on iPlayer for a while.

Perhaps the BBC will now rerun some of the Michael Portillo railway programmes without his commentary. I might watch them then!

Brings back memories of weekends when my family had a boat around Trowbridge

But watch out for that swan!

I've been chased by a swan and I don't recommend it!

Saw a bit of this and managed to convince me missus that there is now a 24 hour canal channel which shows journeys around the UK canal system all day everyday :D
