800024

Just two more 800/0s to go! Was going to take this to Worcestershire Parkway, just to do the new station, but tiredness is kicking in (been a long day of work, walking and much bike riding) and getting home around half 10 with needing to be up at 4am for another gruelling day...Best not!

To be fair, at the beginning of 2020, I still needed 17 800/0s, and apart from a couple of visits to Bristol I've only mostly been looking for them on my local. 15 out of 17 scores on the 800s in 2 and a bit months isn't too bad, and I'm refusing for now to get gen on them. It gives me an excuse to get out of the house on afternoons off at present, combine it with some exercise.

However, I may be out and about again tomorrow hunting IETs. Not decided where I'm going or what I'm doing yet...

I don't quite understand why you refuse gen. Pot luck could mean you will be a couple of years away from clearing them. Back in the 1970s we would kill for any kind of gen like rumours or a telephone call to a landline. Standing still on a platform waiting in hope was very time consuming and eventually very boring and became a waste of time. Nowadays you get gen and can go chase which is more fun.
But then I just sound like an old dinosaur. :D

See it's not quite as rewarding to get your last one of something if you're chasing gen on it. I did that with 166206 recently, to clear my last one of the class and, while it felt great to finally be done with them, it would have felt so much better to have found it by chance.

As I alluded to yesterday, I'm using my trips to and from the station as boredom busters/part of an exercise regime. It gives me somewhere to create an A-B cycling route and an actual reason to go there. Once the 196s start coming my way, I'll eventually be doing the same for those when I get to the final few.

Back in my HST bashing days, getting gen would have been heaven, it would have made the task so much easier to get the final few HST power cars with FGW. It often feels like cheating to get gen, and as I say finding it yourself is so much more rewarding. If it was a Scottish 158 for example, I'd have to swallow my pride and request gen to see where it was, but that's an entirely different situation!

Anyway...

800036 (penultimate 800/0, only need 017 now)

And it was one of those weird mini trips that will warrant a mini trip report later...

I remember when I was looking for 206 which was also my last 166. It was stopped and used for spares for months which put out the idea of sitting around waiting for it. Then when it did eventually come out I got gen because I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer

Having finished my TFW pacers entirely by chance last year I agree it is much more rewarding to go without, but for me it's usually not worth it

Whereas my final 166 was the one which had a mild thermal event at Betchworth and was out of use for a few months when it got repaired.

802006

I FINALLY got my last GWR 800! :D By chance too! 802006 was an unexpected arrival for the 1318 to Paddington, and after a march into town at Malvern for a Nero visit (not an easy feat considering the hilly route) and back before the 1150 from Paddington, by pure luck 800017 rolled in. To say I was bouncing for joy is an understatement!

10 802/0s and 2 802/1s remain before I conquer GWR's IET fleet. I predict a Thames Valley Day Ranger next month...

Woohoo, this is when you will complete them before I do.

I seriously doubt that! Now I've got my last 800/0 I've a lot less desire to go to the station on a daily basis to see what's coming my way. I do keep eyeing up a spìn to Devon, get more of the 802s in, but we'll see what I decide in a couple of weeks.

RealTime Trains now show the Unit allocations for Scot Rail services. A great move forward for the hobby. Let’s hope more train companies follow suit.

Agreed, I had a quick look at how it works the other night when I read about it on the thread for RTT on this forum. Very handy that, assuming I actually make it to the Central Belt any time soon this year I'll be using it quite happily to try and find 170420. Although given I need every 385 I'll obviously be kept extremely busy with those!

Just checked, and it includes the 68s working in Fife; 016 was 2G02 this morning!
