Apologies for being a day late but something happened to this train yesterday and I wondered if anyone may know what.

It was slightly late departing from Leeds (0911) and 5 late at the Hemsworth Loop. By the time it passed South Kirkby Junction it was 77mins late and was apparently further delayed, reaching Sheffield 2 hours late. Eventually, due to the lateness, it was terminated at Newton Abbott.

An announcement at Derby simply stated 'due to a points failure' but the following 0916 Leeds to Kings Cross LNER service passed through South Kirkby without being delayed.

Does anyone know what the problem was and why a further 30 minutes were lost between Moorthorpe and Sheffield? Was it a track failure or a train problem?
(Incidentally, the times shown on RTT are a bit nonsensical)

Just looking at RTT, no inside info.

The preceding Sheffield stopper was heavily delayed round Thurnscoe.

If the RTT times are correct (and there are some nonsense once for both trains) I would guess that the XC was put into Hemsworth loop; either it then went via Doncaster (do XC sign the route?), or it just had a further wait because the points failure wasn't cleared as fast as expected.

XC sign Doncaster to Leeds via Wakefield Westgate.

That would have been the route-setting issue at Swinton. No trains to or from Moorthorpe.

What RTT could not decipher (tbf nor can any other existing system) is that the train had to set back to South Kirby and go via Donny instead. The nonsensical timings shown are the second time the train was picked up at those locations, which obviously overwrote the times it passed there the first time.

I boarded this service at Sheffield-the delay was announced onboard as a points failure.

As bb21 has said above there was a route setting problem at Swinton which meant trains couldn’t run to or from the Moorthorpe line. The 0848 Leeds to Sheffield got as far as the junction before Swinton with the XC not far behind. The XC was sent wrong direction back to Hickleton crossover then South Kirkby reverse and Via Doncaster. The northern train was sent wrong direction back to Bolton on Dearne where it terminates and passengers put on a bus then the 1015 Sheffield to Leeds started at Bolton OD running wrong direction and across Hickleton crossover. Unfortunately decisions were a bit slow and S&T weren’t in the area

1V50 passed Moorthorpe heading south 5mins late, was stopped at S512 signal behind a northern in front. After about 45 mins Drv advised to change ends and head back facing road to Hickleton crossover then normal line to South Kirkby jnc and change ends again (luckily a Leeds based drv was on board travelling passenger who signed the road via Adwick as the Newcastle drv did not)
