typical , used the lea valley services since 1999, managed (unsurprisngly) to ride every 317, kept hoping to see 511 out again and the week after I move back north to Edinburgh it reapears.

It has been used as a Christmas tree at Ilford since part of it was involved in an arson IIRC :)

One of 317502's driving cars caught fire. So the damaged car from 502 was swapped with a working one from 511, and then 317511 became a Christmas tree for many years as MCR247 said. Why they didn't just use 502 as a Christmas tree is beyond me.

That doesn't venture up the West Anglia in service though, so it's not as interesting to me :-P

Very true! Although, 317511 didn't go along the West Anglia today. It had a blast up the GE to Witham at 100mph to blow 5/6 years worth of cobwebs away!

I think it was a case of both 502 and 511 being unservicable so they made one good one out of two bad ones - assuming they use the same unit identifier system as the former SR, the MSO would be the vehicle which gives the unit its identity. Thus the reformed unit would be running around as 75% of 502 with 25% of 511 but critically the 75% includes the MSO...

317511 has also been out today on the test trip to Witham paired with 317668. Another successful trip it would appear.

511 is planned to be moving to Clacton tomorrow for GSM-R mods.
