And people wonder why the enthusiast market is described as being fickle!

My thoughts exactly!!

I often wonder why some people call these locos boring, or any ex-BR loco come to think of it. The railways are gonna be a damn sight less interesting when they're gone, for sure.

Here's something for you to consider. In your opinion, which photo sites do you think will get the most hits in future? Will it be the ones which document the final movements of proper british locos, or will it be the ones which are full of the foreign plastic trash which is replacing them? The answer to me is an obvious one.

Make the most of what's left - you'll only be kicking yourself in a few years' time if you don't!

My post was not about particular classes, more about particular members of a class.

All the british stuff won't be gone for a while yet, well maybe on the mainlines, but for 37s preservation is good. 33/309 are preserved. Not bad, it includes the following:

37003 37009 37025 37032 37037 37075 37097 37099 37108 37119
37131 37142 37152 37165 37188 37190 37198 37201 37207 37211
37214 37215 37219 37227 37240 37248 37254 37263 37264 37275
37414 37901 37905

I personally think there's alot of 37s out there on preserved railways waiting to be bashed. However it seems to me that people on here only care about mainline locomotives, and specific ones at that!! As can be seen, not all 37s will be gone, some may be running at 25mph on preserved railways. It's better than nothing, surely?

At the end of the day though, mainline (not preserved ML-cert ones e.g. 50049) locos only have a finite future. They will be run down and withdrawn. We can stop this happening to a *few* locos, but not all, as money and space constraints prevent all from being preserved.

I hope you understand what I'm getting at.. as it's late and I'm tired :)

I certainly agree about the preservation side of things - it's looking good as far as 37s are concerned. I just think we should make the most of the remaining mainline stuff before it's gone - there won't be many opportunities to sample this kind of traction at mainline speeds once most of it has been preserved/scrapped/withdrawn/whatever.

There's quite a difference between full wack through Haymarket Tunnels and 25mph along the GWSR. :D

Take what you can, when you can is my opinion, and if in the company of like minded enthusiasts, so much the better.

For the first 25 years of my life I lived in Devizes so travelling by train was not common but I can still rememeber taking first generation DMU's from Westbury to Weymouth (trains that change gear!! - seem quaint now), 47's to and from Paddington, 33's to Portsmouth etc etc. Then there were trips to Swindon to see lines of stored loco's, hours spent linesiding at Lavington.

After moving out from home, going through college, getting married etc, I ended up living by the Bristol - Portsmouth line. Listening to regular 33's, 37's and all the other classic British traction passing is something I now miss - a 158 or 66 just doesn't have the same 'whats that - lets go and take a look' appeal.

No doubt, at some point in the future we will mourn the passing of pacers, sprinters, sheds and the rest. It is not that long ago all VT services were loco hauled and now look at the fuss if one or two services have 90 haulage or run to West Country destinations on a summer Saturday with HST or loco haulage! How quickly things change.

Over the last few years, although 'quality' traction has become rare, at least the variety of liveries makes photting more interesting. Thanks also to the preservation movement, all is not lost even, if the sight and sound of classic traction incarcerated on a preserved line is not quite the same as full wang out on the mainline.

Enjoy your favourite traction while you can - nothing lasts forever.

33's are very good thank you, along with any other loco traction. As has been said in this thread, enjoy it while you can.

TBH, I find nothing greafully wrong with 59's, 31's, or any loco except perhaps a 66/67. People don't like certain trains becuase they replace there favourite, but as WSXFan says, then go on to support something else! I would not be surprised to see a few of you on a 59 farwell tour for example!

What is the point in arguing over traction, we all like different things. If WSXFan wants to hate 33's, thats his loss IMO

I like 33s, I think they sound cool. I think that 31s are a bit dry though. I'm sure 59s and 57/6s ying as much as 66/67s!

The 37's will always be the best beasts

However I am fond of class 60's and here is why...

http://michaelsmodernukfreightlocos.photoblog.co.uk/p22135471.html

...Humm Margam have removed a few bits to make it such a monster!!!

..but overall its the class 37's that wear the crown for the best diesel and they will be around for a while yet. EWS will be retaining them for a few years and while WCRC, HNRC and particulary DRS overhaul them and run them the better and long may they live!!!

I was very disappointed to hear that 60019 has a GM engine! It sounds like a 66!

60019 isnt re-engined at all certainly not most probably had a new type of silencer fitted but the loco has seen active use not been stored for two weeks at Toton for an engine change.
