The other week, an On Board Manager apologising for the short form of the train said that a 395 was having WiFi fitted. I travelled on the 07:36 Ashford to St Pancras this morning in the leading car and on the ceiling, adjacent to the universal toilet, was a small off white dome. Could this be a WiFi access point? There were no obvious WiFi networks related to it.

Oddly enough, not too well!

At Ebbsfleet I turned it off as the Facebook app couldn't load any pictures - back on EE 4G and no issues.

Unlike the Thameslink version it didnt ask for any details, just tick to accept T&Cs.

I'm now on the 07:28 AFK-STP veh 39151 and thats broadcasting too but I'm unable yo get an IP address (there's less than eight of us in the carriage). Link speed is shown as 520Mbps from phone to Access Point.

Looking at their coverage map, there are some areas marked as "intermittent" in the London area that I really wouldn't expect to be intermittent, but from my own experience using mobile data in some of these areas, fails to surprise me.

A few areas that I remember having problems at:
  • Between West Dulwich and Herne Hill
  • Between Crofton Park and Nunhead - the map agrees with me on this one
Their map also marks the section of Bromley South to Beckenham Junction being "intermittent" - I've never had any issues in this area, so this seems odd.

Any idea which mobile operator they might be using?

WiFi won't work in tunnels. Southeastern chose Icomera to fit their trains with all the needed systems.

Wi-fi works just as well in tunnels but it can't communicate with the outside world unless there is a feed into the tunnel.

I wouldn't be surprised if HS1 Ltd are investigating the idea already, especially if E* are also after it. Much harder to get it into the channel tunnel though...

It’s already in the Channel Tunnel! Well there’s a phone signal (UK network one way, French network the other). I can’t remember if it’s 2G, 3G or 4G but i’m Sure someone else will know.

Channel Tunnel already has 4G - UK in the north (to France) tunnel, French in the south tunnel.

Southern use EE LTE and also Vodafone HSPA+, as shown here, I would not be surprised if Southeastern have a similar system given the parent company.

Possible there are other links being used too, as this is only a partial screenshot.

(23415 is Vodafone's IMSI Prefix, ie their Mobile Network Code)

It seems the URLs quoted on the Twitter link work for Southeastern too but with a little more info regarding the units.

The 375 shown formed the 07:27 from Ashford P5 whilst I was stood on P6 awaiting the 07:36 to St Pancras.

Im currently sat on the 18:00 St Pancras to Ashford in coach 9 (third coach from the front of the rear unit), veh id 39053 but the wifi seems to think otherwise:

version":"1.9",
"system":"200739052",
"system_id":200739052,
"system_name":"LSERHS395005MS1

The wifi access point is at my end of this carriage, either it's signal isnt very good or its misprogrammed.

The system* numbers seem to reflect veh. number. *Edited to change 'version' to 'system'.

Are you in a station? Could it be picking up from an adjacent unit ?

Just a thought.

This morning sat in the fourth coach from the front (veh 39204) on the 07:36 Ashford to St Pancras and getting:

version":"1.9",
"system":"200739205",
"system_id":200739205,
"system_name":"LSERHS395020MS4

The access point in this carriage is between me and veh 39205 which to the rear of me (country end).
